CLEARWATER, Fla. – Ohio State out-hit Hofstra, 11 to four, but went 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position and left a season-high 14 runners on base in a 4-3 eight-inning loss to the Pride Friday night at the USF adidas Invitational at Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater. The Buckeyes (9-9) scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead, but Hofstra (6-10) tied the game in the bottom of the fifth and won on a walk-off, bases loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth.
Hofstra, which lost on a walk-off single to Virginia Tech earlier Friday, put just seven runners into scoring position in the game and also overcame Ohio State getting its lead-off hitter aboard in every inning. OSU home run and RBI leader Sam Marder (Calabasas, Calif./Calabasas) was walked an OSU record five times in the game, four of which came with at least one runner on base.
Senior Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and went the distance in the circle, working 7.2 innings and striking out six for her 55th career complete game.
With the international tie-breaker rule in affect in the eighth inning (runner placed at second base to begin inning), Ohio State’s Liz Caputo (jr., Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) advanced to third and attempted to score on a grounder to shortstop hit by Brittany Vanderink (jr., Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) but was thrown out at the plate.
In the bottom of the eighth, Hofstra got its runner to third with one out and Ohio State intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases. Ashley Lane, the 2006 Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, hit a fly to center field that Caputo caught on a sprint and it was enough to bring the winning run home.
In Ohio State’s three-run fifth inning, Juarez drew a bases loaded walk, senior Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) hit a bases loaded single and senior Lauren Daykin (Melbourne, Australia/Manatee C.C., Fla.) hit an RBI sacrifice fly to drive in runs.
Vanderink notched her second three-hit game of the season, while Caputo and Daykin added two hits each.
Hofstra’s Kayleigh Lotti got the win, allowing 11 hits and walking seven. The Pride has won 10-consecutive conference championships, the last five coming in the Colonial Athletic Conference.
Ohio State concludes pool play Saturday with an 11 a.m. game against Virginia Tech. Bracket play begins Saturday afternoon.
