Women’s Tennis Opens Big Ten Play with Shutout of Wisconsin – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team extended its winning streak to four matches with a 7-0 victory over Wisconsin in its Big Ten opener Sunday at Jesse Owens West Tennis Center in Columbus. The Buckeyes improve to 9-4 this season (1-0 Big Ten), while the Badgers drop to 3-8 (0-3 Big Ten).
The Buckeyes swept doubles to open the match ahead, 1-0. At No. 1 the duo of Julie Blackmore (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and Ally Mueller (Fr., Roswell, Ga./New Braunfels (Texas) posted an 8-3 victory over Kaylan Caiati and Elizabeth Carpenter. The No. 3 duo of Kristin Messmer (Lutherville, Md./McDonogh) and Ciara Finucane (Dublin, Ireland/Georgia Southern) clinched the doubles point, as they downed Morgan Tuttle and Kim Roberts, 8-3. At No. 2, Sonia Ruzimovsky (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) and Caitlin O’Keefe (Jr., Troy, Mich./Troy) downed Nicole Beck and Chelsea Nusslock, 8-6.
The Buckeyes won all seven singles matches. Angela DiPastina (So., Titusville, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton) won the first match off the court, downing Roberts, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6. Christina Keesey (Fr., Northfield, Minn./Northfield) followed with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Carpenter at No. 2. Ruzimovsky posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jobe at the fourth position and Mueller defeated Nusslock at No. 3, 7-5, 7-5. O’Keefe won a super-tiebreaker over Tuttle at the fifth spot (6-0, 3-6, 1-0 (3)) and Blackmore closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Caiati at No 1.
Ohio State returns to action when they travel to Florida for two matches. The team will face Wichita State at 10 a.m. and Florida Gulf Coast at 3 p.m. March 19 in Fort Myers, Fla. The team then will travel to face Big Ten foes Minnesota March 23 and Iowa March 25
