BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Just 14 hours after throwing her first career no-hitter, Ohio State sophomore Kim Reeder nearly did it again. Reeder no-hit host UAB Saturday night, then held Birmingham-Southern to two hits Sunday in a 3-1 win for the OSU softball team at the Magic City Classic hosted by Alabama-Birmingham at George Ward Park.
The Buckeyes (7-6) were held to three hits on the cold and windy morning, but got two RBI singles from freshman Sam Marder (Calabasas, Calif./Calabasas) and another run off one of two errors committed by Birmingham-Southern (6-11).
Reeder (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.) improves to 5-2 in the circle and has won her last three decisions. After striking out eight and walking eight Saturday night in her no-hitter, Reeder struck out five Sunday, walked three and hit three batters.
The Buckeyes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when lead-off batter Nycole Koyano (Sr., Walnut, Calif./Walnut) was hit by a pitch, stole second and came home on Marder’s single up the middle. Pinch-runner Michelle Reynolds-Parra (So., Columbus, Ohio/Eastmoor) then scored when Courtney Pruner (So., Akron, Ohio/Ellet) bounced a two-out grounder that was booted by the UAB second-baseman.
OSU junior Brittany Vanderink (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) led off the third inning with a walk, which chased BSC starter Melissa Muehlenfeld from the game in favor of Bethney Reynoldson, the Big South Conference pitcher of the week the last two weeks. Vanderink stole second on Reynoldson’s first pitch, then came home on Marder’s second single up the middle of the game, but it would be the last run for Ohio State.
Senior Lauren Daykin (Melbourne, Australia/Manatee C.C., Fla.) doubled to lead off the bottom of the fourth but was left at second. She reached third on a one-out three base error by the BSC left-fielder in the sixth inning but was stranded.
The Panthers scored their lone run without a hit in the fifth inning thanks to two OSU errors, a hit by pitch and a ground out.
Ohio State takes on host UAB at noon (CT) Sunday in the Buckeyes’ final game at the Magic City Classic.

– Ohio State sophomore Kim Reeder has allowed one earned run in her last 18.1 innings pitched.
– Ohio State senior Megan Schwab had her team-best six-game hitting streak snapped in the win over Birmingham-Southern Sunday morning.
– Ohio State’s three hits in the win over BSC matched their season-low hit total. The Buckeyes also had three hits in a 4-0 loss to Texas Tech in Tempe Feb. 10.
– The last time Ohio State won a game with three or few hits was last season on March 24 when the Buckeyes had two hits in a 2-0 win at Long Beach State.
– The last time Ohio State had exactly three hits in a game but still won was also in the state of Alabama, that coming last season on March 3 in a 3-1 win at then-No. 4 Alabama.
– Ohio State and Birmingham-Southern met for the first time in softball Saturday. BSC first fielded a team in 2002 and had its first winning season last year at 28-21 and 7-5 in the Big South Conference.
