Women’s Tennis Posts 5-2 Win at Michigan State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team used five singles wins to down Big Ten foe Michigan State, 5-2, Friday in East Lansing, Mich. The Buckeyes, who are ranked 46th nationally, improve to 13-5 this season and are 3-1 in conference play. The host Spartans fall to 11-5 and 1-2 in Big Ten action.
The Buckeyes return home to host Syracuse at 11 a.m. Sunday. The match is scheduled for the outdoor courts at the Stickney Tennis Center in Columbus. In the case of inclement weather, the match will be moved to Wedgewood Country Club in Powell, Ohio.
The Buckeyes lost the doubles point to open play down, 1-0. The Spartans won the first match off the court, when Ana Milosavljevic and Pascale Schnitzer downed Buckeyes Sonia Ruzimovsky (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) and Caitlin O’Keefe (Jr., Troy, Mich./Troy) at No. 2, 8-5. Michigan State then clinched the doubles point with a win at No. 1 by Christine Bader and Stephanie Kebler over Julie Blackmore (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and Ally Mueller (Fr., Roswell, Ga./New Braunfels (Texas), 8-4. The match at No. 3 doubles came down to a tiebreaker after being tied at 8-all. Spartans Sarah Andrews and Jessica Baron beat Buckeye seniors Kristin Messmer (Lutherville, Md./McDonogh) and Ciara Finucane (Dublin, Ireland/Georgia Southern), 8-7 (6).
Ohio State won the first four singles matches off the court to clinch the win. At No. 5 O’Keefe downed Milosavljevic, 6-0, 6-1, followed by Ruzimovsky’s victory over Baron at No. 4, 6-2, 6-3. Julie Voss (So., San Angelo, Texas/St. Stephen’s Academy) extended her winning streak to 11 matches and stayed undefeated this spring with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Marianne Eelens at No. 6. Mueller clinched the Buckeyes’ win with a three-set, come-from-behind victory over Bader at the No. 1 position (1-6, 6-3, 6-4). After Blackmore suffered a three-set loss to Kebler at No. 2 (6-0, 4-6, 7-5), Christina Keesey (Fr., Northfield, Minn./Northfield) wrapped up the match with her team-best 20th win of the season, as she downed Schnitzer (7-6 (3, 6-7, 4-0, ret.).
