Women’s Lacrosse wins, 15-14, in overtime over St. Bonaventure – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (4-2, 0-1 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team needed a Megan Levins’ (Fr., Hatfield, Pa.) overtime goal to secure a 15-14 victory over St. Bonaventure (1-4) in a game played Sunday at Merrill Field on the campus of Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y. OSU’s Kristen Slahor (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.), Kelly Haggerty (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) and Levins each scored three goals against the Bonnies with Slahor adding a game-high four assists. Kimberly Ross scored a team-high four goals for St. Bonaventure.
Ohio State opened the first half with a 5-0 lead. Jessica Patane (Jr., Farmingdale, N.Y.) opened the scoring at 28:19 with Natale Miller (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) making it 2-0 at 27:08. Patane’s second goal at 26:06 was assisted by Slahor. Buckeye goals by Keri Yourick (So., Castle Rock, Colo.) (24:24), assisted by Slahor, and Levins (23:58), made it a 5-0 Ohio State lead. St. Bonaventure, with goals by Kimberly Ross (22:41), Katelyn Faas (21:57) and Brenna Houghton (20:32), assisted by Faas, cut the OSU lead to 5-3. OSU’s Slahor’s scored at 19:56 with an assist by Haggerty. A Haggerty eight-meter goal at 15:59 and a Yourick goal pushed the Buckeyes lead to five at 8-3. St. Bonaventure, with a Molly Hastrich goal, at 13:02 made it 8-4. Buckeye goals by Slahor (11:50) and by Haggerty, assisted by Slahor, at 2:49 gave Ohio State a 10-4 lead. The Bonnies closed out the half with a three-goal run starting with a Ross goal at 2:14. Goals by Faas (0:54) and Stephanie Jordan (0:17) completed the run to cut the Ohio State lead to three at 10-7. Brenna Houhgton assisted all three goals to end the half.
St. Bonaventure stretched their scoring run to five goals opening the second half with a Jordan goal at 27:57, assisted by Houghton. Patty Nessle scored to cut the Buckeye lead to one at 10-9 with a Faas assist. The Buckeyes took the lead to three (12-9) when goals by Haggerty (26:42), assisted by Slahor, and Slahor’s third goal (23:47) made it 12-9. Nicole Mahoney scored an eight-meter goal at 18:12 and a third goal by Ross at 18:02 cut the Ohio State lead to one at 12-11. St. Bonaventure tied the game at 12 with a Lynsey Wagner goal at 15:38, assisted by Faas. The Bonnies took their first lead of the game at 9:52 when Ross scored her fourth goal of the game. The Buckeyes evened the score at 13 at 8:03 with a Levins’ eight-meter goal. A Houghton goal at 6:33 gave St. Bonaventure a 14-13 lead. The Buckeyes controlled the following draw and tied the game at 14 with a Miller goal at 5:24. Regulation play closed with the score tied, 14-14.
Ohio State controlled the draw in the first half of the overtime period and scored at 2:43 on a Levins’ goal, assisted by Yourick, to take a 15-14 lead. In the second half of the first overtime period, St. Bonaventure was awarded an eight-meter attempt with six seconds left in the overtime. Buckeye goalie Joy DeMarco (Sr., Hudson, Ohio) stopped the shot to secure the victory.
DeMarco had the win in goal for Ohio State, playing the final 36 minutes. She posted eight saves while giving up seven goals. Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) had the start, playing the first 30 minutes, collecting seven saves and giving up seven goals. Eboni Preson took the loss in goal for St. Bonaventure, making 10 saves and giving up 15 goals.
Ohio State returns home this weekend to play two non-conference matches. The Buckeyes host Virginia Tech (4-6) Friday at 7 p.m. and play California (5-1) Sunday at Noon. Both games are scheduled to be played at the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
