Ohio State Women’s Tennis Drops Big Ten Match to Iowa, 7-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team lost its first Big Ten match of the season, falling to Iowa, 7-0, Sunday in Iowa City, Iowa. The Buckeyes, who ended their season-best winning streak at seven, fall to 12-5 on the year and 2-1 in conference play. The host No. 55-ranked Hawkeyes move to 6-7 overall and 2-1 in the league.
The Buckeyes lost the doubles point for just the fifth time this season, marking the first time this year the squad lost all three doubles matches. At No. 3, seniors Kristin Messmer (Lutherville, Md./McDonogh) and Ciara Finucane (Dublin, Ireland/Georgia Southern) lost in a tiebreaker to Kayla Berry and Kelcie Klockenga, 8-7 (4). At No. 1 Julie Blackmore (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and Ally Mueller (Fr., Roswell, Ga./New Braunfels (Texas) lost to Jacqueline Lee and Mili Veselinovic, 8-5, and at No. 2 Sonia Ruzimovsky (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) and Caitlin O’Keefe (Jr., Troy, Mich./Troy) were defeated by Hillary Mintz and Merel Beelen, 8-3.
The Buckeyes lost the six singles matches in straight sets as the squad was shut out for the first time this season. At No. 1 Lee downed Blackmore, 6-4, 6-1, and at No. 2 Mueller was defeated by Veselinovic, 6-1, 6-3. Christina Keesey (Fr., Northfield, Minn./Northfield) lost to Mintz, 6-4, 6-0, at the third spot. At No. 4 Ruzimovsky fell to Berry, 6-4, 6-3, and O’Keefe was downed by Klockenga at the fifth position, 7-6 (4), 6-3. At No. 6 Angela DiPastina (So., Titusville, N.J./Hun School of Princeton) lost to Beelen, 6-4, 6-1.
The Buckeyes return to action with two matches next weekend. The team will travel to East Lansing, Mich., to face Big Ten foe Michigan State at 3 p.m. Friday before hosting Syracuse at 11 a.m. Sunday.
