Ohio State Diving Competes at NCAA Zone Diving Region Qualifier – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s and women’s diving team will compete at the 2007 NCAA Zone C Diving Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. Friday through Sunday. The women who qualify for the NCAA championships will compete in Minneapolis, Minn., March 7-9. The men will travel to Minneapolis the following weekend, March 15-17, for the championships.
Julie Broms (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) will look to qualify for the NCAA championships on the 1- and 3-meter events. Last year, Broms recorded a 14th-place finish on the 1-meter and an eighth-place finish on the 3-meter at the Zone Diving competition. She earned fourth place on the 1-meter and fifth place on the 3-meter at the 2007 Big Ten Championships. Broms won the 3-meter four times throughout the dual-meet season.
On the men’s side, Kellen Harkness (Sr., Puyallup, Wash./Cascade Christian) and Nick Hanneman (Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) also contend for a chance to compete for NCAA championships in their final year. Last year, Harkness posted a third-place finish on the 1-meter and a fifth-place finish on the 3-meter at the zone meet to qualify for the 2006 NCAA Championships in both events. He went on to finish fifth on the 3-meter at the national championship meet. Harkness won the 3-meter at the Big Ten championships and was named Big Ten Diver of the Week twice this year. He also earned Co-Big Ten Diver of the Meet, as well as conference Diver of the Year.
In 2005, Hanneman qualified for the 2005 NCAA Championships on both the 1- meter by placing fifth in the event at the national qualifying meet. He went on to finish 28th in the event at the national championships. Hanneman also qualified for the NCAA meet on the 3-meter, finishing 19th at the competition. Hanneman did not compete in 2006 because he was injured. Burkley Showe (Fr., Columbus, Oho/Thomas Worthington) will compete on the 1- and 3-meter in hopes of qualifying for his first NCAA championships. Showe won the 1-meter board and placed fourth on the 3-meter at the 2006 Big Ten Championships. He earned Big Ten Diver of the Week honors for his performances against Indiana when he won both the 1- and 3-meter boards. Showe shared Big Ten Diver of the Meet honors with Harkness and was also named Co-Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
Last year, Wes Weiser (So., Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) was the runner-up on the 10-meter platform at the Zone C Diving competition. He won the event at the 2007 Big Ten Championships. Weiser also placed seventh on the 1-meter and ninth on the 3-meter at the conference meet.
Competition will begin Friday with the 3-meter springboard. The 1-meter will be contested on Saturday, with the meet concluding on Sunday with the platform event. Preliminary action begins at 11 a.m., with finals beginning at 1:45 p.m. Live results are available at mgoblue.com.
