Women’s Tennis Shuts Out Florida Gulf Coast, 7-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Coming off a victory over No. 16-ranked Wichita State earlier in the day, the Ohio State women’s tennis team rounded out action with a 7-0 win over Florida Gulf Coast University Monday in Fort Myers, Fla. The Buckeyes swept the singles and doubles matches en route to their seventh shutout this season and their sixth-consecutive victory.
Ohio State now is 11-4 on the season (1-0 Big Ten). The Eagles, ranked 11th nationally in Division II, drop to 7-5.
The Buckeyes won all three doubles matches. The duo of Sonia Ruzimovsky (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) and Caitlin O’Keefe (Jr., Troy, Mich./Troy) downed Lydia Diaz Galindo and Pernille Sattari, 8-1, to open play at the No. 2 spot. The Ohio State tandem of Julie Blackmore (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and Ally Mueller (Fr., Roswell, Ga./New Braunfels (Texas) then clinched the doubles point with an 8-2 victory over Maria Maggiorini and Krista Polulak at the first position. At No. 3, seniors Kristin Messmer (Lutherville, Md./McDonogh) and Ciara Finucane (Dublin, Ireland/Georgia Southern) closed out play with an 8-6 win against Joanne Power and Brett Kinley.
Ohio State swept the six singles matches in straight sets. Christina Keesey (Fr., Northfield, Minn./Northfield) was the first off the court after a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Polulak at the third position. Julie Voss (Jr., San Angelo, Texas/St. Stephen’s Academy) beat Power (6-2, 6-1) to stay undefeated this spring (9-0). At No. 3 Ruzimovsky beat Kinley to earn the Buckeyes’ fourth point and the match win. Blackmore then downed Maggiorini at No. 1 (6-3, 6-1), Mueller defeated Sattari at No. 2 (6-2, 6-2) and O’Keefe beat Diaz Galindo at No. 5 (6-3, 6-1).
The Buckeyes return to Big Ten play with two road matches this weekend. The team will take on No. 47 Minnesota at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Minneapolis and No. 52 Iowa at 11 a.m. Sunday.
