– Ohio State freshman Rebecca Schultz made her first collegiate start Saturday (designated player).
– Buckeyes at the plate: Senior Nycole Koyano hit her 10th career triple in the game, giving her sole possession of fourth place on the OSU career triples list. Anna Smith (1999-02) is No. 3 with 11 … freshman Sam Marder drove in her team-leading 19th run of the season … senior Megan Schwab’s RBI single in the sixth inning was her 99th career RBI.
– Buckeyes in the circle: Sophomore Kim Reeder has thrown complete games in her last five starts … Ohio State pitchers have thrown complete games in eight of the last night games … in nine starts this season, Reeder has thrown six complete games, giving her 21 for her career.
– Buckeyes in the field: Freshman catcher Sam Marder threw out her seventh base runner of the season Saturday. In the third inning Marder nabbed Virginia Tech’s Callie Rhodes, who entered the game 13-for-15 in the stolen base department this season.
– Weather: Mostly sunny and 72 degrees at first pitch. Slight breeze out to right field.
– Ohio State is now 1-1 all-time against Virginia Tech. In the first meeting between these two teams, the Hokies won, 1-0, in 2004 at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga.
– Virginia Tech has seven starters back from its 2006 team that went 39-21 and 12-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference for a third-place finish.
