Women’s Volleyball rallies for a 3-2 victory at No. 22 Minnesota – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (11-10 overall, 5-7 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team rallied from an 2-0 Minnesota (12-10, 5-7) lead to defeat the No. 22 Golden Gophers, 3-2, (24-30, 23-30, 30-27, 31-29, 15-10) Saturday night in Williams Arena in from of 6,285 fans. OhioState’s Danielle Meyer (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) posted a match-high 22 points in the match with 20 kills, one ace serve and two assist blocks. Katie Dull (Fr., Solon, Ohio) had 15.5 points in the match with 12 kills, two ace serves and three assist blocks. OSU setter Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) had 13 points with 10 kills, two ace serves and two assist blocks adding 10 digs for her first career triple-double. Minnesota’s Rachelle Hagerty produced a team-high 21.5 points with 15 kills, an ace serve, four solo blocks and three assists. Lauren Gibbemeyer contributed 18 points with 12 kills, an ace serve and 10 assist blocks and Brook Dieter added 14 with 12 kills and two ace serves.
Minnesota broke a 17-17 tie in game one with a Hagerty kill. A Gibbemeyer kill, an OSU error and a Gibbemeyer-Hartmann block gave the Gophers a 21-17 lead. Minnesota reached game point at 29-22 with an OSU error. A Meyer kill and an Ami Stevens (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio) ace serve made it 29-24. A Jessy Jones kill gave Minnesota a 30-24 win in the game. The Gophers hit .162 for the game to .070 for the Buckeyes.
Tied at six in game two, a Buckeye error and a Hagerty-Jones block put Minnesota ahead, 8-6. The Gophers held the lead, winning the game with a Dieter kill at 30-23 to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead in the match. The Gophers hit .194 in the game to .000 for OhioState.
Game three had six lead changes and 16 ties in a close contest. The Buckeyes trailed, 14-11, when a Kristi Hunter (Fr., Roblin, Manitoba, Canada) kill, a Kaila Calhoun (Fr., Elkhart, Ind.)-Hunter block and a Minnesota error tied the game at 14. Tied at 16, Minnesota with a Gibbemeyer kill and a Gibbemeyer-Kyla Roehrig block took an 18-16 lead. Leading 22-20, two Minnesota errors tied the game at 22. Tied at 25, a Gopher error and kills from McCarthy and Meyer gave OhioState a 28-25 lead. An OSU error made it 28-26. A Jones-Roehrig block cut the OhioState lead to one at 28-27. The Buckeyes reached game point at 29-27 with a kill from Stevens. A Minnesota error ended the game at 30-27, cutting the Gopher match lead to 2-1. The Buckeyes hit .065 for the game while Minnesota hit -.021.
Minnesota held a six point lead in game four at 14-8. The Buckeyes rallied to score seven straight points to take a 15-14 lead. The run began with two Gopher errors and a Calhoun-Hunter block to trail, 14-11. The run continued with a Hunter kill, a Calhoun-McCarthy block, a Meyer kill and a Minnesota error to take a 15-14 lead. A Hagerty kill tied the game at 15. Tied at 20, an OSU error, a Jones-Roehrig block and a Jones kill gave Minnesota a 23-20 lead. The Gophers expanded the lead to five at 26-21. Kills from Meyer and McCarthy and a Gopher error cut the Minnesota lead to two at 26-24. A Hagerty kill made it 27-24. OhioState cut the lead to one at 27-26 with a Gopher error and a Calhoun kill. The score moved to 28-27 with a Gibbemeyer kill and a Gopher error. An ace serve by McCarthy tied the game at 28. Minnesota took a 29-28 lead with a Hagerty kill and was serving match point. OhioState stopped the point with a Calhoun kill to tie the game at 29. A Gopher error made it 30-29, OhioState, with the Buckeyes serving game point. The Buckeyes won the game, 31-29, with a Hunter ace serve to tie the match at two games each. Minnesota hit .200 in the game to .170 for OhioState.
Tied at one in the fifth game, a Kelly Roysland kill and a Roehrig solo block gave Minnesota a 3-1 lead. Errors by both teams moved the score to 4-2. Ohio Sate tied the game at four with a Meyer kill and a Dull ace serve. Errors by both teams made it five-all. Kills from Meyer and Hagerty made it 6-6. OhioState, with a Meyer kill took a 7-6 lead. A Gopher error and a Calhoun-Hunter block opened up a three-point lead at 9-6 for OhioState. After a Minnesota time out, three straight Gibbemeyer kills tied the game at nine. A Gopher error put the Buckeyes ahead, 10-9. A McCarthy ace serve and a Hunter kill gave the Buckeyes a three-point lead at 12-9 as the Gophers called time out. A Calhoun-Hunter block gave OSU a 13-9 lead. Minnesota cut the lead to three, at 13-10, with a Gibbemeyer-Hartmann block. OhioState reached match point at 14-10 with a Meyer kill. A Gopher error ended the game to give OhioState a 15-10 win in the fifth game and a 3-2 victory in the match. In the game, the Buckeyes hit .120 to .045 for Minnesota.
Minnesota hit .117 for the match to .083 for the Buckeyes. OhioState edged the Gophers, 59-58 in kills and had an eight-to-six margin in ace serves. Minnesota had 15 service errors in the match to 14 for OhioState. Defensively, the Gophers had an 85 to 79 advantage in digs with Gopher Christine Tan collecting a match-high 25. Minnesota had a 22-11 margin in team blocks in the match. Gibbemeyer had a match-high 10 assist blocks for Minnesota. For the Gophers, Hartmann had a match-high 43 assists while OSU’s McCarthy posted 39.
OhioState returns home next week to host Indiana Friday at 7 p.m. and Purdue Sunday at 2 p.m. in St. John Arena.
