Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Iowa – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (10-10 overall, 4-7 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team behind 19 points from Danielle Meyer (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) won a 3-0 (30-15, 30-28, 31-29) road victory over Iowa (9-12, 1-10) Friday. Meyer had match-highs of 14 kills and eight blocks (two solos, six assists) against the Hawkeyes. Iowa’s Megan Schipper posted a team-high 15 points in the match with 13 kills, a solo block and two assists.
OhioState opened game one with a kill and solo block by Katie Dull (Fr., Solon, Ohio). A Catherine Smale kill cut the lead to 2-1. The Buckeyes, with kills from Ami Stevens (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio) and Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.), a Dull ace serve and a Meyer solo block, opened up a 6-1 lead. OhioState outscored Iowa 24-14 to win the game, 30-15, with a McCarthy solo block. The Buckeyes hit .258 for the game to -.125 for the Hawkeyes.
Two OSU kills from Kristi Hunter (Fr., Roblin, Manitoba, Canada) started the Buckeyes at 2-0 in game two. At 3-1, an OSU error and a Kiley Fister kill tied the game at three. A Fister ace serve and two OSU errors gave Iowa a 6-3 lead. At 11-8, kills from Meyer and Kaila Calhoun (Fr., Elkhart, Ind.) and a Hawkeye error tied the game at 11. The Buckeyes broke a 14-14 tie with a kill from Stevens and a Meyer-Dull block to take a 16-14 lead. Trailing 24-19, Iowa scored four straight points to cut the lead to one at 24-23. A Calhoun solo block made it 25-23. Two Schipper kills tied the game at 25. The score went to 26-all with kills from Stevens and Schipper. Kills by Meyer and Iowa’s Katie Wessels tied the game at 27. Two Hawkeyes errors put OhioState at game point, 29-27. An Iowa kill by Laura Kremer stopped a game point at 29-28. OhioState won the game, 30-28, with a McCarthy-Meyer block for a 2-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .171 to Iowa’s .130.
OhioState, with two kills from Meyer and a Hawkeye error, started game three with a 3-0 lead. The Hawkeyes had a nine to six run to tie the game at nine. The Buckeyes then scored the next seven points starting with a kill from Stevens, a Meyer-Stevens block and a Meyer kill to take a 12-9 lead. After three Hawkeye errors and a Calhoun ace serve, OhioState held a 16-10 lead. With the Buckeyes leading, 27-22, two kills from Schipper, one from Lisa Vitali and a Fister ace serve cut the Ohio State lead to one at 27-26. A Hawkeye error and a Vitali kill took the score to 28-27. A Calhoun kill set match point at 29-27. A Buckeye error and a Kremer kill tied the game at 29. A Hunter kill gave the Buckeyes a 30-29 lead and their third match point. A kill from Stevens closed out the game at 31-29 to give the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead. OhioState hit .157 for the game to .082 for the Hawkeyes.
The Buckeyes hit .187 for the match to .037 for Iowa. OhioState had a 43-40 edge in kills while each squad posted five ace serves. Iowa gave up eight service errors to four for the Buckeyes. OSU had a 54-50 advantage in digs with Iowa’s Emily Hiza recording a match-high 16. At the net, the Buckeyes enjoyed a 13.5 to seven margin in team blocks. OSU’s Meyer had a match-high eight blocks with two solos and six assists. Buckeye McCarthy posted six total blocks with three solos and three assists. At setter, OSU’s McCarthy collected a match-high 32 assists while Iowa’s Fister had 27.
OhioState continues on the road Saturday when they face No. 22 Minnesota (12-9, 5-6) at 8 p.m. ET. The match will be carried live on the Big Ten network.
BUCKEYE NOTES: With two ace serves from Briana McCarthy, she now has 103 in her career and has moved to 18th on the OhioState career list, moving out of a four-way tie for 19th and passing Jen Flynn (1996-99) with 102.
Three solo blocks by Briana McCarthy has moved her to 10th on the OSU career list with 53. She passed teammate Danielle Meyer who has 52.
Six assist blocks from Danielle Meyer gives her 393 for her career and has moved her to second on the OhioState career list. She passed Suzie Stiling (1999-02) with 392.
