COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (9-10 overall, 3-7 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team returns to the road for matches at Iowa (9-12, 1-9) Friday and at 22nd-ranked Minnesota (12-8, 5-5) Saturday. The Buckeyes will face the Hawkeyes Friday night at 7 p.m. and will play the Golden Gophers in a 7 p.m. match that will be televised live by the Big Ten Network.
A LOOK AT OHIOSTATE
Head coach Jim Stone is in his 26th season with the Buckeyes. OhioState is 9-10 overall and 3-7 in the Big Ten. Last week OhioState lost 3-0 (30-17, 30-27, 30-21) at Wisconsin and won 3-2 (30-26, 30-24, 29-31, 22-30, 17-15) at Illinois.
Danielle Meyer (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) leads the Buckeyes in points per game with a 5.22 average. Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) ranks second at 3.46 with Katie Dull (Fr., Solo, Ohio) third at 3.29. Meyer leads the team in kills per game at 4.21 with Dull second at 2.85 and McCarthy third at 2.55. Meyer is the top percentage hitter on the squad with a .275 average. McCarthy ranks second at .271 with Kristen Dozier (So., SandySpring, Md.) third at .253. At setter Betsy Hone (Fr., Celina, Ohio) has a 9.10 assist per game average with Ashley Hughes (So., Carroll, Ohio) averaging 9.08. McCarthy has produced a team-high 21 ace serves with a .31 per game average. Anna Szerszen (So., Conflans Ste Hne, France) ranks second with 15 (.39) with Meyer third with 14 (.21). Defensively, Ami Stevens (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio) has a team-high 3.03 digs per game average for the Buckeyes. Calhoun ranks second at 2.48 with Meyer third at 2.46. At the net, Meyer leads the team in blocking with a 1.46 per game average with 10 solos and 88 assists. McCarthy ranks second at 1.03 with 12 solos and 57 assists. Dozier ranks third at .96 with four solos and 51 assists. Stevens has a .971 reception percentage to lead the squad with 561 reception attempts with 16 errors. Meyer ranks second at .955 with 354 attempts and 16 errors.
As a team, OhioState is averaging 18.76 points, 14.39 kills per game and is hitting .210. The Buckeyes average 13.31 assists, 1.48 aces, 14.42 digs and 2.90 blocks per game. A LOOK AT IOWA
Head coach Cindy Fredrick is in her fourth season with the Hawkeyes. Iowa is 9-12 overall and is 1-9 in the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes have lost their last six matches including 3-0 defeats at MichiganState (30-24, 30-26, 30-25) and at Northwestern (31-29, 30-22, 30-19) last week.
Iowa’s Megan Schipper is the top point scorer for the Hawkeyes with a 3.76 per game average. Laura Kremer ranks second at 3.54 with Aimee Huffman third at 2.37. Schipper is the team leader in kills per game at 3.14 with Kremer and Becky Walters tied for second at 2.63. Kremer is the top active percentage hitter at .228. At setter, Kiley Fister is averaging 7.81 assists per game with Huffman at 3.14. Fister leads the team with 20 ace serves (.26 per game) with Huffman second with 16 (.21) and Schipper (.22) and Emily Hiza (.19) tied for third with 15 each. Defensively, Hiza leads the team with a 4.46 digs per game average. Megan Eskew ranks second at 2.16 with Fister third at 1.83. At the net, Kremer is averaging a team-high 1.38 blocks per game with 20 solos and 88 assists. Walters ranks second at 1.21 with 10 solo and 42 assists with Huffman third at .93 (5-66). As a team, Iowa is averaging 17.94 points and 13.72 kills while hitting .168.
The Hawkeyes average 12.29 assists, 1.31 aces, 14.69 digs and 2.92 blocks per game. Iowa opponents average 19.13 points and 15.50 kills per game while hitting .195. Opponents average 14.51 assists, 1.09 aces, 16.67 digs and 2.54 blocks per game.
OHIO STATE – IOWA SERIES
OhioState leads the series with Iowa, 46-8. In Iowa City, the Buckeyes are 19-4 against the Hawkeyes. On the court, OhioState has won 19 consecutive matches against Iowa, but has six straight victories in Iowa City due to OSU forfeits. Earlier this season in Columbus, Ohio State won 3-1 (30-22, 30-21, 25-30, 30-25) over the Hawkeyes.
A LOOK AT MINNESOTA
Head coach Dr. Mike Hebert is in his 12th season for the 22nd-ranked Golden Gophers. Minnesota has a 12-8 overall record and is 5-5 in the Big Ten. The Golden Gophers have lost the last five matches prior to their match Friday vs. PennState. Last week, Minnesota lost 3-2 (30-16, 25-30, 30-27, 27-30, 17-15) at Northwestern and 3-0 (30-28, 35-33, 30-22) at MichiganState.
The top point scorer for Minnesota is Kyla Roehrig with a 4.36 per game average. Brook Dieter, at 4.28, ranks second and Jessy Jones is third at 3.88. Dieter has a team-high 3.66 kills per game average with Roehrig ranking second at 3.60. Lauren Gibbemeyer ranks third at 2.83. The top percentage hitter for Minnesota is Jones at .313. Setter Rachel Hartmann is averaging 12.26 assists per game. Gibbemeyer leads the team with 22 ace serves (.31 per game) with Dieter second with 17 (.25). Tied for third with 16 each are Christine Tan (.24) and Hailey Cowles (.24). Tan leads the team in digs per game with a 4.60 average. Dieter ranks second at 2.66 with Hartmann third at 2.33. At the net, Jones has a team-high 1.65 blocks per game average with 17 solos and 82 assists. Tied for second at 1.07 are Gibbemeyer (13-62) and Roehrig (30-42). As a team, Minnesota is averaging 20.11 points and 15.30 kills while hitting .226.
The Golden Gophers average 14.13 assists, 1.31 aces, 16.03 digs and 3.49 blocks per game. Minnesota opponents average 17.66 points and 14.20 kills per game while hitting .152. Opponents average 13.03 assists, 1.19 aces, 14.76 digs and 2.27 blocks per game.
OHIO STATE – MINNESOTA SERIES
Minnesota holds a 30-29 lead in the series with OhioState. In Minneapolis, the Golden Gophers have a 14-11 advantage. The Buckeyes have lost the last four matches with Minnesota including a 3-2 (30-27, 30-24, 21-30, 30-32, 15-10) loss in Columbus earlier this season.
MEYER RECORDS FIRST CAREER TRIPLE-DOUBLE
Danielle Meyer vs. Illinois recorded her first career triple-double with 27 kills, 17 digs and 12 total blocks (1-11). Her 27 kills and 17 digs were season highs while her 11 assist blocks and 12 total blocks were career highs. She added two assists and an ace serve to produce a season-high 34.5 points, .5 short of her career-high of 35 set at Towson in 2006. At Wisconsin, Meyer recorded eight kills, an ace serve, four digs and five blocks. She is the OSU team leader in points (5.22), kills (4.21), blocks (1.46) and is third in digs (2.46).
MEYER TIES FOR SECOND IN OSU MATCH ASSIST AND TOTAL BLOCKS
Danielle Meyer, with 11 assist blocks and 12 total blocks at Illinois fell just short of the OhioState match records in both categories. She tied Margie Meyers (1984-87) for second in assist blocks with teammate Kristen Dozier (So., SandySpring, Md.) setting the record twice with 13. In total blocks, Meyer is in a three-way tie for fourth with Meyers (1-11) and Kristi Neuman (1983-86; 4-8). Dozier (twice; 0-13) and Jenny Collins (1981-84; 7-6) hold the OSU match record for total blocks with 13.
MEYER MOVES TO THIRD IN OSU CAREER ASSIST BLOCKS
Danielle Meyer, with five assist blocks at Wisconsin and a career-high 11 at Illinois has moved to third on the OhioState career assist blocks list with 387. She passed Dana Stearns (1997-00) with 380. Meyer needs six assist blocks to pass No. 2 Suzie Stiling (1999-02) with 392.
MEYER NOW THIRD IN OSU CAREER TOTAL BLOCKS
Danielle Meyer collected 17 total blocks (1-16) last week and now has 439 career total blocks (52-387). She had five assist blocks at Wisconsin and a solo and 11 assists at Illinois. Her 439 blocks has moved her to third on the Ohio State career total blocks list passing Sherri Helman (1993-96) with 423 (63-360). Meyer needs 17 total blocks to pass No. 2 Suzie Stiling (1999-02) with 455 (63-392).
DULL HAS BACK-TO-BACK DOUBLE-FIGURE KILL MATCHES
Katie Dull recorded 10 kills at Wisconsin and 15 at Illinois last week. She added two digs and an assist blocks to produce 10.5 points against the Badgers. At Illinois, she had a career-high five assist blocks, adding four digs and an ace serve to produce 18.5 points against the Illini. Dull has had 10 double-figure kill matches this season. For the season, she is averaging 3.29 points, 2.85 kills, 1.34 digs and .84 blocks per game.
McCARTHY BACK AT SETTER AGAINST THE ILLINI
Briana McCarthy was the starting setter at Illinois and had 59 assists in the win. She added six kills, five digs and had a career-high 10 assist blocks against the Illini. At Wisconsin, McCarthy had eight kills, eight digs, two assist blocks, an ace serve and three assists against the Badgers. McCarthy is averaging 3.47 points, 2.55 kills, .31 aces, 1.88 digs, 1.03 blocks and 3.24 assists per game this season. In her four full starts at setter, McCarthy is averaging 11.41 assists per game.
McCARTHY TIES FOR 19TH IN OSU CAREER ACES
Briana McCarthy had an ace serve at Wisconsin to give her 101 career aces and move her into a four-way tie for 19th in OhioState career ace serves. She is now tied with teammate Ami Stevens, Katie Virtue (1999-02) and Margaret Meyers (1984-87). McCarthy needs two aces to move past No. 18 Jen Flynn (1996-99) with 102.
CALHOUN HAS A CAREER-HIGH 10 BLOCKS AT ILLINOIS
Kaila Calhoun recorded career-highs of nine assist blocks and 10 total blocks at Illinois last week. Her previous best was six assists against Minnesota earlier this season. Calhoun added seven kills, 11 digs and three assists against the Illini. At Wisconsin, she had three kills and seven digs against the Badgers. For the season, Calhoun is averaging 1.51 points, 1.06 kills, 2.48 digs and .50 blocks per game.
STEVENS NOW FIFTH IN OSU CAREER DIGS
Ami Stevens collected a combined 27 digs last week with 12 at Wisconsin and 15 at Illinois. She now has 1,266 career digs and has moved in solo possession of fifth place on the OhioState career digs list. She previously had been tied with Laura Davis (1991-94) for fifth with 1,239 assists. Stevens needs 16 digs to move past No. 4 Holly O’Leary (1987-90) with 1,281.
STEVENS HAS THREE CONSECUTIVE DOUBLE-FIGURE DIG MATCHES
Ami Stevens, with 12 digs at Wisconsin and 15 at Illinois, has had double-figure digs in her last three matches (10 vs. Michigan). At Wisconsin, she added two kills, an assist block and an assist. At Illinois, Stevens had 10 kills, an assist block and an assist. Stevens has started the last three matches at outside hitter and for the season is averaging 3.03 digs per game to lead the Buckeyes.
HUNTER SEES EXTENDED ACTION AT ILLINOIS
Kristi Hunter (Fr., Roblin, Manitoba, Canada) saw her first extended action of the season coming off the bench at Illinois. She played in all five games recording eight kills, six digs and six assist blocks in the match, all career highs. In game five against the Illini, a Hunter kill gave OSU a 14-11 lead to serve for the match. Her second kill of the game broke a 14-14 tie to give OSU a second match point at 15-14.
STEVENS NAMED THE BIG TEN DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Oct. 8
Ami Stevens (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio) has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for her play in home matches against Minnesota and Iowa. Stevens posted a season-high 25 digs in the 3-2 loss to 11th-ranked Minnesota. She added two ace serves and two assists in the match and handled 38 reception attempts without an error. Against Iowa, in a 3-1 victory, Stevens recorded a match-high 19 digs against the Hawkeyes adding an ace serve and an assist. She handled 30 of 32 reception attempts in the match against the Hawkeyes. For the season, Stevens leads OhioState in digs per game with a 3.04 average.
Head Coach Jim Stone announces he will retire after the 2007 season
Jim Stone, OhioState women’s volleyball head coach, announced Sept. 10 he will retire effective July 31, 2008.
“I have been coaching every fall for 29 years,” Stone said. “I’ve found every season challenging and fun. I’d like to thank both OhioState and the University of Wyoming for the opportunity to pursue a passion.”
Gene Smith, director of athletics at The Ohio State University, praised the career of Stone.
“Jim has been an ambassador for The Ohio State University and our volleyball program for more than a quarter century,” Smith said. “His record and list of accomplishments overshadow the positive effect he has had on hundreds of young people over the years. He will be missed.”
“I know I will miss coaching good players and I’ve been fortunate to be able to do that,” Stone said. “Watching players improve and achieve great things is a thrill for which I have no words to describe.”
With regards to his future plans, Stone is keeping his options open.
“I am not going to rule out coaching again, but right now I would like to step away to work on some volleyball-related projects that I’m excited about.”
BUCKEYES TO MAKE FIVE APPEARANCES ON THE BIG TEN NETWORK, ONE ON ESPN2
The Big Ten Network will carry five OhioState women’s volleyball matches live this season. The first was Oct. 5 against Minnesota at 6 p.m. Two other home matches will be broadcast by the Network. They include OhioState’s match against Wisconsin that has been moved from Saturday, Nov. 17 to Monday Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. The following Wednesday, Nov. 21, will have Ohio State playing Penn State on the Network at 8 p.m. Buckeye road contests on the Network included at Penn State on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. and at Minnesota, Saturday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. Ohio State was also featured on one of three Big Ten matches to be carried by ESPN2. OhioState’s match at Wisconsin on Friday, Oct. 19 was broadcast on Sunday, Oct. 21 at noon.
MEYER A UNANIMOUS CHOICE FOR THE 2007 PRESEASON ALL-BIG TEN TEAM
Middle blocker Danielle Meyer was one of three unanimous selections to the 2007 Preseason All-Big Ten team. Meyer is a two-time American Volleyball Coaches Association third-team All-American and a two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection. This is the second time she has earned preseason honors. PennState and Wisconsin each placed three players on the team while Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, OhioState and Purdue had one player each on the team.
Meyer, a 2006 ESPN The Magazine Second-Team Academic All-American, averaged 4.26 kills 1.96 digs and .85 blocks per game last season while hitting .301. She started all 32 matches in 2006, the first 22 at outside hitter and the last 10 at middle blocker.
OHIOSTATE PICKED TO FINISH FOURTH IN THE BIG TEN PRESEASON POLL
The Buckeyes, by a vote of the Big Ten Conference coaches, were tabbed to finish fourth in the league. Four-time defending Big Ten champion PennState was picked to finish first with Wisconsin second and Minnesota third. Following OhioState, Purdue was ranked fifth, Michigan sixth, Michigan State seventh, Illinois eighth, Northwestern ninth, Iowa 10th and Indiana 11th.
HEAD COACH JIM STONE
Jim Stone enters his 26th season at OhioState. He has a 527-288 record with the Buckeyes and is 293-171 in Big Ten play. His squads have won Big Ten Championships in 1989, 1991 and 1994 and finished tied for second in 2004 before being named the Big Ten Coach of the Year. He was the 1991 Volleyball Monthly National Coach of the Year and the Big Ten Coach of the Year in 1989, 1991, 1994 and 2004. Under Stone, OhioState has participated in the NCAA championship in 15 of the last 18 years, advancing to the national semifinals in 1991 and 1994. Stone’s coaching career record includes three years at Wyoming (1979-1981). His 29-year career record is 577-330.
OHIO STATE WINS THE ACTIVE ANKLE CHALLENGE
The Buckeyes won three matches at the Active Ankle Challenge in Muncie, Ind. OSU opened play with a 3-0 (30-24, 30-22, 30-19) win over Southeast Missouri State. BallState, with a 3-2 (26-30, 30-23, 30-24, 25-30, 15-13) victory over Maine completed the first round. The Buckeyes started the second round with a 3-0 (30-12, 30-19, 30-19) win over Maine. SouthwestMissouriState defeated BallState, 3-2 (30-22, 30-23, 23-30, 27-30, 15-13) to complete the second round. SouthwestMissouriState started round three with a 3-0 (30-22, 30-24, 30-20) win over Maine. The Buckeyes won the Challenge with a 3-0 (30-21, 30-28, 30-23) victory over BallState. OhioState’s Danielle Meyer was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament with teammates Ami Stevens and Briana McCarthy selected to the All-Tournament Team. Also named to the team were Brenna Schlader and Molly Davis from SoutheastMissouriState, Lindsay Allman from Maine and Alyssa Rio from BallState.

Danielle Meyer was named the Best Attacker and Kristen Dozier the Best Blocker at the 2007 Sports Imports Classic. Other all-tournament members included USC’s Asia Kaczor as the Most Valuable Player and Taylor Carico as the Best Setter. Oregon’s Heather Meyers was named the Best Server and Katie Swoboda, the Best Libero. Southern California (2-0) won the Classic with a 3-2 win over OhioState (0-2) and a 3-0 victory over Purdue (1-1). Oregon (1-1) lost to Purdue, 3-1 and defeated OhioState, 3-0.
