Gray defeats Scarlet in Annual Scarlet & Gray Meet – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s swimming team kicked off the 2007-08 season with the annual Scarlet & Gray meet Friday in the McCorkle Aquatics Pavilion. The Gray women defeated the Scarlet women, 102-99.
Samantha Cheverton led the Gray squad and captured two wins in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.06) and 200 backstroke (2:05.29). Leading the Scarlet team was senior captain Linda Lund-Kristiansen who picked up wins in both the sprint freestyle events. Lund-Kristiansen touched in at 24.38 in the 50 freestyle and at 52.77 in the 100 freestyle.
“It is a great starting point for us,” Jeanne Fleck, head swimming coach, said. “I am very pleased with how things are progressing for us. There are rusty parts but overall, everything is going really well and we are very excited for the upcoming season.”
Mae McCorkle, who the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatics Pavilion is named for, and Bob Bartels, former Ohio State swimming coach, All-American and member of the 1949 national championship Buckeyes, served as honorary coaches for the Scarlet and Gray teams, respectively. Ms. McCorkle, however, was not able to make the meet. Bartels spoke to his Gray teams before the meet.
The Ohio State women’s team will open its season with a double-dual meet Oct. 27 at traditional Division III power Kenyon College. Ohio University will also be competing.
