Women’s Volleyball hosts 11th-ranked Minnesota Friday on the Big Ten Network and Iowa Saturday – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio– The OhioState (7-6 overall, 1-3 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team returns home this week to host 11th-ranked Minnesota (11-3, 4-0) Friday and Iowa (9-6, 1-3) Saturday. The Friday match with the Golden Gophers will be telecast live by the Big Ten Network with the starting time moved up to 6 p.m. The Saturday match with the Hawkeyes will begin at 7 p.m. Both matches will be played in St. John Arena. Last week OhioState lost road matches at Purdue, 0-3 (26-30, 26-30, 23-30) and at Indiana 1-3 (19-30, 18-30, 30-25, 20-30).
TIME CHANGE FOR MINNESOTS MATCH FRIDAY
The Big Ten Network has announced they will broadcast the Ohio State-Minnesota match live in St. John Arena, Friday, Oct. 5. The match will start at 6 p.m. to accommodate the Network.
BUCKEYES TO MAKE FIRST OF FIVE APPEARANCES ON THE BIG TEN NETWORK
The Big Ten Network will carry five OhioState women’s volleyball matches live this season. The first is Friday against Minnesota. The starting time has been moved to 6 p.m. to accommodate the Network. Two other home matches will be broadcast by the Network. They include OhioState’s match against Wisconsin that has been moved from Saturday, Nov. 17 to Monday Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. The following Wednesday, Nov. 21, will have Ohio State playing Penn State on the Network at 8 p.m. Buckeye road contests on the Network include at Penn State on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. and at Minnesota, Saturday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. Ohio State will also be featured on one of three Big Ten matches to be carried by ESPN. OhioState’s match at Wisconsin on Friday, Oct. 19 will be broadcast on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m.

Kristen Dozier (So., SandySpring, Md.) is the top percentage hitter on the squad with a .318 average. Meyer ranks second at .310 and McCarthy third at .279. At setter Betsy Hone (Fr., Celina, Ohio) has a 10.61 assists per game average with Ashley Hughes (So., Carroll, Ohio) averaging 9.44. McCarthy has produced a team-high 17 ace serves with a .39 per game average. Anna Szerszen (So., Conflans Ste Hne, France) ranks second with 10 (.38) with Kaila Calhoun (Fr., Elkhart, Ind.) (.23) and Meyer (.20) tied for third with nine aces each. Defensively, Ami Stevens (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio) has a team-high 2.63 digs per game average for the Buckeyes. Meyer ranks second at 2.43 with Calhoun third at 2.36. At the net, Meyer leads the team in blocking with a 1.36 per game average with five solos and 55 assists. Dozier ranks second at 1.02 with three solos and 42 assists. McCarthy ranks third at .98 with 11 solos and 32 assists. Meyer has a .967 reception percentage to lead the squad with 214 reception attempts with seven errors. Stevens ranks second at .966 with 353 attempts and 12 errors. As a team, OhioState is averaging 19.14 points, 14.68 kills per game and is hitting .227. The Buckeyes average 1.66 aces, 14.41 digs and 2.81 blocks per game. A LOOK AT MINNESOTA
Head coach Dr. Mike Hebert is in his 12th season for the Golden Gophers. Minnesota, ranked 11th-nationally, has an 11-3 overall record and is 4-0 in the Big Ten Conference. Last week the Golden Gophers won 3-0 (30-24, 30-17, 32-30) at Iowa and defeated Michigan, 3-0 (31-29, 31-29, 30-26) at home. Minnesota has won its last seven matches and is 21-1 in games during those seven matches.
Brook Dieter leads Minnesota in points per game with a 4.95 average. Kyla Roehrig ranks second at 4.73 with Jessy Jones third at 3.80 and Lauren Gibbemeyer fourth at 3.50. In kills per game, Dieter has a team-high 4.26 average with Roehrig second at 3.84. Jones ranks third at 2.76 kills per game with Gibbemeyer fourth at 2.62. Gibbemeyer is the top percentage hitter on the squad at .315 with Jones second at .312. At setter Rachel Hartmann averages 12.74 assists per game for the Golden Gophers. Gibbemeyer and Dieter share team-high honors with 15 ace serves each averaging .32 per game. Hailey Cowless ranks third with 13 at .29 with Christine Tan fourth with 11 (.24). Defensively, Tan leads the team with a 4.67 digs per game average. Dieter is second at 2.91 with Kelly Roysland third at 2.73. At the net, Jones leads the team with a 1.73 blocks per game average with 16 solos and 62 assists. Roehrig ranks second at 1.25 (23-32) with Gibbemeyer third at .96 (8-37). As a team, Minnesota is averaging 21.04 points and 15.87 kills per game while hitting .248. The Golden Gophers average 14.68 assists, 1.47 aces, 16.66 digs and 3.70 blocks per game. Minnesota opponents average 16.22 points and 13.34 kills per game while hitting .123. Opponents average 12.23 assists, .91 aces, 14.40 digs and 1.97 blocks per game.
OHIO STATE – MINNESOTA SERIES
OhioState and Minnesota are tied at 29 wins each in the series. In matches played in Columbus, the Buckeyes have a 16-9 advantage. The Gophers have won the last three matches including a 3-1 (23-30, 30-27, 30-21, 30-28) win in Columbus and a 3-0 (30-22, 30-28, 30-19) win in Minneapolis last season.
A LOOK AT IOWA
Head coach Cindy Fredrick is in her fourth season for the Hawkeyes. Iowa, prior to their Friday match at Penn State, has a 9-6 overall record and is 1-3 in the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes lost at home, 0-3 (24-30, 17-30, 30-32) to Minnesota and defeated Michigan, 3-2 (28-30, 29-31, 30-25, 30-28, 15-10) last week.
Iowa’s Megan Shipper leads the team in points per game at 3.89. Laura Kremer ranks second at 3.41 and Becky Walters is third at 3.35. Schipper has a team-high 3.20 kills per game average with Walters second at 2.63 and Kremer, 2.50. Walters leads the team in hitting percentage at .265 with Schipper and Kremer at .222. At setter, Kiley Fister is averaging 6.98 assists per game with Aimee Huffman at 4.27. Fister has a team-high 18 aces serves for a .31 per game average. Schipper ranks second with 15 (.30) and Huffman is third with 14 (.25). Defensively, Emily Hiza has a team-high 4.50 digs per game average on the squad. Megan Eskew ranks second at 2.26 with Fister third at 1.90. At the net, Kremer has a team-high 1.34 blocks per game average with 13 solos and 65 assists. Walters ranks second at 1.21 (10-42) with Katie Kennedy third at .93 (3-38). As a team, Iowa is averaging 18.33 points and 14.03 kills per game and is hitting .183. The Hawkeyes average 12.53 assists, 1.53 aces, 14.83 digs and 2.76 blocks per game. Opponents average 17.22 points and 14.69 kills per game and are hitting .179. Iowa opponents average 13.79 assists, 1.07 aces, 16.36 digs and 2.33 blocks per game.
OHIO STATE – IOWA SERIES
OhioState has a 45-8 lead in the series with Iowa. In Columbus, the Buckeyes are 23-4 against the Hawkeyes. OhioState has won 38 straight matches against Iowa on the court. Beacuse of Ohio State forfeits, the Buckeyes have won the last 12 contests against the Hawkeyes. Last season, OhioState won 3-1 (25-30, 30-25, 30-24, 30-26) at Iowa and 3-0 (30-25, 30-26, 30-14) at Iowa.
Head Coach Jim Stone announces he will retire after the 2007 season
Jim Stone, OhioState women’s volleyball head coach, announced Sept. 10 he will retire effective July 31, 2008.
“I have been coaching every fall for 29 years,” Stone said. “I’ve found every season challenging and fun. I’d like to thank both OhioState and University of Wyoming for the opportunity to pursue a passion.”
Gene Smith, director of athletics at The Ohio State University, praised the career of Stone.
“Jim has been an ambassador for The Ohio State University and our volleyball program for more than a quarter century,” Smith said. “His record and list of accomplishments overshadow the positive effect he has had on hundreds of young people over the years. He will be missed.”
“I know I will miss coaching good players and I’ve been fortunate to be able to do that,” Stone said. “Watching players improve and achieve great things is a thrill for which I have no words to describe.”
With regards to his future plans, Stone is keeping his options open.
“I am not going to rule out coaching again, but right now I would like to step away to work on some volleyball-related projects that I’m excited about.”
STEVENS NOW SEVENTH IN OHIO STATE CAREER DIGS WITH 1,180
Ami Stevens had 17 digs last weekend to give her 1,180 for her career and move her to seventh on the OhioState career digs list. She passed Julie Chellevold (1988-91) with 1,173. Stevens had 10 digs at Purdue and added seven at Indiana last weekend. She needs 18 digs to move past No. 6 Erika Schlitz (1988-91) with 1,197.
STEVENS IS THE TEAM LEADER IN DIGS PER GAME
Ami Stevens is averaging a team-high 2.63 digs per game. She leads the team with 108 digs. Stevens posted 10 digs at Purdue and added seven against Indiana. She handled 30 reception attempts against the Boilermakers without an error. At Indiana, Stevens handled 48 of 51 reception attempts. She has played in all 13 matches with three starts at outside hitter and nine at libero including the last three matches. Stevens has the second-best reception percentage on the squad at .966 with 12 errors in 353 attempts.
MEYER MOVES TO THIRD IN OHIO STATE CAREER POINTS WITH 1,830
Danielle Meyer recorded 31.5 points last weekend and now has 1,830 career points. She had 14 points at Purdue and 17.5 at Indiana. Meyer has moved to third on the OhioState career points list passing Jenny Jackson (1992-95) with 1,828 points. Next on the list is No. 2 Holly O’Leary (1987-90) with 2,064 points.
MEYER EQUALS HER SEASON-HIGH WITH SIX ASSIST BLOCKS AT PURDUE
Danielle Meyer equaled her season-high with six assist blocks at Purdue for the fourth time this season. She had 11 kills (.296) and 11 digs in the match. Meyer handled 20 of 21 reception attempts against the Boilermakers. Against Indiana she had 15 kills (.351), nine digs, three assist blocks and an ace serve. Meyer handled 16 of 18 reception attempts against the Hoosiers. She has started all 13 matches this season and is averaging team-highs of 5.09 points, 4.16 kills and 1.36 blocks per game. Meyer is hitting .310 on the season and ranks second on the squad in digs per game at 2.43 and has nine ace serves.
MCCARTHY THE TEAM LEADER IN ACE SERVES WITH 17
Briana McCarthy is the OhioState team leader in ace serves with 17 and is averaging .39 per game. She ranks second on the squad in points at 5.09, kills at 3.09 and is third in blocking at .98. McCarthy had seven kills, eight digs and two assist blocks at Purdue and recorded nine kills, 10 digs and four assist blocks at Indiana. She has started all 13 matches this season.
FRESHMAN DULL HAS STARTED ALL 13 MATCHES
Katie Dull has started all 13 matches this season as a freshman. At Purdue, she had seven kills, three digs and three blocks and had eight kills, eight digs and an assist block at Indiana. Dull is averaging 3.31 points and 2.90 kills per game ranking third on the season. She is averaging 1.69 digs, .43 blocks per game and has eight ace serves on the season.
HONE RUNNING THE OFFENSE
Betsy Hone started at setter for the 10th time this season. She has played in 12 of the 13 matches this year. Hone is averaging 10.61 assists, 1.89 digs and .67 blocks per game. At Purdue, she posted 32 assists, four kills, two ace serves, four digs and two assist blocks. Hone produced 30 assists, seven digs, a kill and an assist block at Indiana.
SZERSZEN EQUALS HER SEASON-HIGH OF FOUR DIGS AT INDIANA
At Indiana, Anna Szerszen equaled her season-high of four digs. Previously, she had four in two earlier matches. Against the Hoosiers, Szerszen added seven kills, two ace serves and an assist block off the bench. At Purdue, as a starter, she had three kills, three digs, two assist blocks and an ace serve. Szerszen has played in nine matches this season, starting five times. She is averaging 2.77 points, 2.15 kills, .85 digs and .46 blocks per game. She is second on the team in ace serves with 10 averaging .38 per game.
DOZIER IS AVERAGING 1.02 BLOCKS PER GAME
Kristen Dozier ranks second on the team in blocks per game with a 1.02 average. She has three solos and 42 assist blocks. Dozier had three assist blocks and five kills at Purdue and contributed six assist blocks and two kills at Indiana. Dozier has played in all 13 matches with 10 starts. She is averaging 2.11 points and 1.57 kills per game.
KASTEIN POSTS A CAREER-HIGH TWO ACE SERVES AT PURDUE
Laura Kastein recorded a career-high two ace serves at Purdue. She previously had a single ace serve in three matches. Kastein has played in 10 matches with two starts as a defensive specialist. She has five ace serves on the season and has a 1.15 digs per game average with 31 digs.
CALHOUN EQUALS HER CAREER-HIGH OF TWO ACE SERVES AT INDIANA
Kaila Calhoun equaled her career-high of two ace serves in the Indiana match. Previously she had two aces in two matches. Calhoun started against the Hoosiers and had a kill and two digs in the match while handling 11 of 12 reception attempts. Against Purdue, she played in one game picking up three kills and two digs in the match. Calhoun has played in all 13 matches with five starts at outside hitter and four at libero. She is averaging 1.18 points, .85 kills, .23 aces per game on the season. She ranks third on the team in digs per game at 2.36.
MEYER A UNANIMOUS CHOICE FOR THE 2007 PRESEASON ALL-BIG TEN TEAM
Middle blocker Danielle Meyer was one of three unanimous selections to the 2007 Preseason All-Big Ten team. Meyer is a two-time American Volleyball Coaches Association third-team All-American and a two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection. This is the second time she has earned preseason honors. PennState and Wisconsin each placed three players on the team while Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, OhioState and Purdue had one player each on the team.
Meyer, a 2006 ESPN The Magazine Second-Team Academic All-American, averaged 4.26 kills 1.96 digs and .85 blocks per game last season while hitting .301. She started all 32 matches in 2006, the first 22 at outside hitter and the last 10 at middle blocker.
OHIOSTATE PICKED TO FINISH FOURTH IN THE BIG TEN PRESEASON POLL
The Buckeyes, by a vote of the Big Ten Conference coaches, were tabbed to finish fourth in the league. Four-time defending Big Ten champion PennState was picked to finish first with Wisconsin second and Minnesota third. Following OhioState, Purdue was ranked fifth, Michigan sixth, Michigan State seventh, Illinois eighth, Northwestern ninth, Iowa 10th and Indiana 11th.
HEAD COACH JIM STONE
Jim Stone enters his 26th season at OhioState. He has a 525-284 record with the Buckeyes and is 291-165 in Big Ten play. His squads have won Big Ten Championships in 1989, 1991 and 1994 and finished tied for second in 2004 being named the Big Ten Coach of the Year. He was the 1991 Volleyball Monthly National Coach of the Year and the Big Ten Coach of the Year in 1989, 1991, 1994 and 2004. Under Stone, OhioState has participated in the NCAA championship in 15 of the last 18 years, advancing to the national semifinals in 1991 and 1994. Stone’s coaching career record includes three years at Wyoming (1979-1981). His 29-year career record is 575-326.
OHIO STATE WINS THE ACTIVE ANKLE CHALLENGE
The Buckeyes won three matches at the Active Ankle Challenge in Muncie, Ind. OSU opened play with a 3-0 (30-24, 30-22, 30-19) win over Southeast Missouri State. BallState, with a 3-2 (26-30, 30-23, 30-24, 25-30, 15-13) victory over Maine completed the first round. The Buckeyes started the second round with a 3-0 (30-12, 30-19, 30-19) win over Maine. SouthwestMissouriState defeated BallState, 3-2 (30-22, 30-23, 23-30, 27-30, 15-13) to complete the second round. SouthwestMissouriState started round three with a 3-0 (30-22, 30-24, 30-20) win over Maine. The Buckeyes won the Challenge with a 3-0 (30-21, 30-28, 30-23) victory over BallState. OhioState’s Danielle Meyer was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament with teammates Ami Stevens and Briana McCarthy selected to the All-Tournament Team. Also named to the team were Brenna Schlader and Molly Davis from SoutheastMissouriState, Lindsay Allman from Maine and Alyssa Rio from BallState.
MEYER AND DOZIER EARN ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS AT THE SPORTS IMPORTS CLASSIC
Danielle Meyer was named the Best Attacker and Kristen Dozier the Best Blocker at the 2007 Sports Imports Classic. Other all-tournament members included USC’s Asia Kaczor as the Most Valuable Player and Taylor Carico as the Best Setter. Oregon’s Heather Meyers was named the Best Server and Katie Swoboda, the Best Libero. Southern California (2-0) won the Classic with a 3-2 win over OhioState (0-2) and a 3-0 victory over Purdue (1-1). Oregon (1-1) lost to Purdue, 3-1 and defeated OhioState, 3-0.
