Women’s Volleyball loses 3-0 to No. 15 Michigan – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (8-9 overall, 2-6 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team fell to 15th-ranked Michigan (16-4, 4-4), 3-0 (30-27, 30-27, 30-28) Saturday night in St. John Arena in front of 1,726 fans. OhioState’s Danielle Meyer (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) had a team-high 18.5 points for the Buckeyes with 15 kills, two solo blocks and three assist blocks. Michigan’s Katie Bruzdzinski recorded a match-high 23 points for the Wolverines with 19 kills and four ace serves.
OhioState, in game one, expanded a 6-4 lead with a Meyer kill and a Michigan error to hold a four point margin. Michigan cut into the lead and trailed 16-15 before a four point Buckeye run made it 20-15. Two Michigan errors, a Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) kill and a triple block by Kaila Calhoun (Fr., Elkhart, Ind.), Katie Dull (Fr., Solon, Ohio) and McCarthy competed the run. Michigan, with a Veronica Rood kill, a Lyndsay Miller-Lexi Zimmerman block and an OSU error tied the game at 24. After ties at 25 and 26, an OhioState error and a Bruzdzinski kill gave the Wolverines a 28-26 lead. After an OSU time out, a Zimmerman kill set game point at 29-26. A McCarthy kill stopped the game point at 29-27 but a Buckeye service error ended the game at 30-27, Michigan. The Wolverines hit .256 for the game to .273 for OhioState.
Michigan jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game two. The Wolverines took the lead to four at 7-3 with a Bruzdzinski ace serve. Trailing, 9-7, Buckeye kills from Meyer and McCarthy tied the game at nine. At 12-all, kills from Ami Stevens (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio) and Meyer and a Michigan error gave Ohio State a 15-12 lead. Trailing, 16-14, Michigan scored the next seven points off four Buckeye errors, a Miller-Sarah Draves block, a Stesha Selsky ace serve and a Rood kill. Michigan held the lead, reaching game point at 29-26 with a Draves kill. A Meyer solo block stopped the game point attempt at 29-27 but a Buckeye error ended the game at 30-27, Michigan to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead in the match. Michigan hit .214 for the game to .208 for OhioState.
The Wolverines scored the first four points of game three with two Bruzdzinski kill, one from Zimmerman and a Beth Karpiak solo block. Michigan took the lead to six at 9-3 with a Draves kill. A 7-3 OhioState run cut the Michigan lead to 12-11. A Calhoun kill tied the game at 12. A McCarthy solo block and a Susan Halverson (Fr., Apple Valley, Minn.) ace serve gave OhioState a 14-12 lead. Kills from Bruzdzinski and Selsky tied the game at 14. A Calhoun kill and a Michigan error gave the Buckeyes a 16-14 lead. The Buckeyes held a 24-22 lead when a Karpiak kill and a Karpiak-Draves block tied the game at 24. The Michigan run continued with a Bruzdzinski kill, two Karpiak-Draves blocks and a Bruzdzinski ace serve to hold a 28-24 lead. A Meyer kill cut the margin to 28-25. A Bruzdzinski kill set match point at 29-25. The Buckeyes stopped three match points with kills from Stevens and Ashley Hughes (So., Carroll, Ohio) and an ace serve from Stevens to make it 29-28. Michigan won the game, 30-28, with a Miller kill to win the match, 3-0. The Wolverines hit .180 for the game to .121 for OhioState.
Michigan hit .214 for the match to OSU’s .193. The Wolverines had a 50-29 edge in kills and a seven to three margin in ace serves. Michigan gave up five service errors to 10 for OhioState in the match. Defensively, the Wolverines had a 69-48 advantage in digs with Selsky recording a match-high 26. At the net, OhioState edged Michigan in team blocks, 8.5 to eight. Wolverine Karpiak had a match-high six total blocks with two solos and four assists. Michigan’s setter Zimmerman and OSU’s Hughes each recorded 42 assists in the match.
OhioState returns to the road next week when they face ninth-ranked Wisconsin Friday at 7 p.m. and Illinois Sunday at 2 p.m. The Wisconsin match will be delayed telecast by ESPN2 Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. ET.
