Women’s Volleyball falls to No. 3 Penn State, 3-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (8-8 overall, 2-5 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (30-23, 30-17, 30-16) decision at third-ranked Penn State (15-2, 7-0) Wednesday night. Ohio State’s Anna Szerszen (So., Conflans Ste Hne, France) recorded a team-high 14 points for the Buckeyes with 13 kills and two assist blocks. Penn State’s Megan Hodge scored a match-high 18.5 points in the contest with 15 kills, an ace serve and five assist blocks.
Penn State broke a 2-2 tie in game one with a Christa Harmotto kill and two from Nicole Fawcett to take a 5-2 lead. The Nittany Lions reached game point off an OSU error at 29-22. A Danielle Meyer (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) kill stopped the first game point at 29-23. A Hodge kill ended the game at 30-23 to give Penn State a 1-0 lead in the match. The Nittany Lions hit .400 for the game to .150 for Ohio State.
A Buckeye error and a Hodge kill gave Penn State a 2-0 lead in game two. The Nittany Lions expanded the lead and won the game, 30-17, with a Harmotto-Hodge block to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Penn State hit .400 for the game to .064 for the Buckeyes.
Two Szerszen kills gave Ohio State a 2-1 lead to open game three. Penn State responded with nine straight points to take a 10-2 lead. A Blair Brown kill set match point at 29-16. Penn State won the game, 30-16, with a Harmotto-Hodge block, winning the match, 3-0. The Nittany Lions hit .652 in the game to .000 for Ohio State.
For the match, Penn State hit .462 to Ohio State’s .080. The Nittany Lions had a 51-36 advantage in kills and edged the Buckeyes two to one in ace serves. Penn State gave up 10 service errors to nine for Ohio State. Defensively, the Nittany Lions had a 39-32 margin in digs. Sharing match-high honors for digs with 11 each were OSU’s Meyer and Penn State’s Roberta Holehouse. At the net, Penn State produced 12.5 team blocks to 6.5 for Ohio State. Harmotto recorded a match-high eight blocks in the contest with a solo and seven assists. Penn State setter Alisha Glass posted a match-high 35 assists while Ohio State’s Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) had 28.
Ohio State returns home Saturday at 7 p.m. to host 16th-ranked Michigan (15-3, 3-3) in St. John Arena.
