Buckeyes Go 2-0 at Kent State Fall Invitational Sunday – Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State takes two on final day to go 4-1 overall in Kent
COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State softball team went 2-0 Sunday at the Kent State Fall Invitational in Kent, Ohio, posting a 5-0 victory over Eastern Michigan and defeating Kent State, 2-1, in eight innings.
In the circle, sophomore Megan Miller held Eastern Michigan scoreless in a five inning appearance, giving up only five hits. In the finale, sophomore Rebecca Schultz was the difference against Kent State, posting the game winning hit in the bottom of the eighth inning to hand Ohio State its fourth win of the tournament.
“I think the weekend provided a lot of learning situations for our young team and we felt there was a progression of getting better, which is what you always want from your fall season,” Linda Kalafatis, Ohio State head coach, said. “For our first time out, this is something to build on and we’ll hope as we complete the fall season next weekend, we show an ability to work together well as a team and continue to improve on our skills.”
Against Easter Michigan, Miller struck out five and joined junior pitcher Kim Reeder for the shutout. Freshman Brittany Goodchild was 3-for-4 with an RBI while senior Brittany Vanderink was 2-for3, while other.RBIs came from freshmen Rachael Shepherd and Nic Perales as well as sophomore Tory Haddad, junior Cortney Cannon and senior Liz Caputo.
In the final game of the tournament, sophomore pitcher Lindsay Bodeker allowed only five hits and one unearned run while striking out five Golden Flashes. Ohio State scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning, tying the score at 1-1 on an RBI single from junior Courtney Pruner, who went 2-for-3. Kent State then kept the Buckeyes quiet for six-consecutive innings until the bottom of the eighth, when Schultz had the game-winning RBI in the international tie-breaker, scoring Shepherd from third. Goodchild, Haddad and Cannon each contributed singles.
Ohio State returns to action in Columbus Saturday when the Buckeyes host the Seventh Annual Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic. Ohio State begins the tournament by taking on Ohio at 1 p.m. at Fred Beekman Park on West Campus.
