COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team fell to Penn State, 141.5-98.5, at the McCoy Natatorium in University Park, Pa., Friday. The Buckeyes won five of the 13 events, but dropped their record to 6-3 overall. The meet was previewed as SwimmingWolrdMagazine.com meet of the week.
“We swam pretty well,” Jeanne Fleck, head swimming coach, said. “I would say we wanted to win and we didn’t do that, but it was probably our best away meet in a year and a half. We got up and raced. We tied the medley relay and had some good splits on it. Some stand out performances came from our freshmen. Katie Bell had her first college win on a springboard event, so that was exciting. Jill Lockhart was a stud, too. She had some tough races and wound up winning the 200 back. I feel really good about how the meet went.”
The meet got off to an exciting start when the Ohio State team of Gulsah Gunenc (Sr., Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian), Rebekah Rychvalsky (Sr., Sydney, Australia/Castle Hill), Linda Lund (Jr., Roennede, Denmark/Haslev) and Elaine Chan (So., Hong Kong China/ Hupp Yenn) split the win with Penn State when both teams stopped at 1:46.62.
Chan captured the first individual win for the Buckeyes, swimming the only sub-24 time of 23.94 in the 50-yard freestyle. Ohio State continued to excel in the freestyle events when Griet Buelens (Jr., Kapelle-Op-Den-Bos, Belgium/Ursuline Academy) led a sweep of the100-yard distance in a time of 52.53. Annie Rennenbom (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) followed suit, clocking a time of 53.57 and Stasia von Rahl (So., Mishawka, Ind./St. Joseph’s) rounded out the podium in 54.52.
Buelens also recorded a time of 1:52.14 for second place in the 200-yard freestyle. Haley Mitchell (Fr., Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Western) was the fastest swimmer for Ohio State in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Her time 10:20.47 earned her third place.
Jill Lockhart (Fr., Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) garnered a win for the Buckeyes in the 200-yard backstroke. She edged out Penn State swimmer Jessica Barnes with a time of 2:04.19. Barnes swam the event in 2:04.36. Lockhart swam to a third-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley, swimming the team’s fastest time of 2:07.79.
Katie Bell (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Graham School) also picked up a win for Ohio State in her first collegiate victory on a springboard event. Bell won the 3-meter in a score of 335.62. Julie Broms (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) was the runner-up with a score of 302.62. On the 1-meter, Bell was edged out by three points to take second place in a score of 277.73. Broms rounded out the podium in a score of 376.90.
Penn State swimmers sandwiched Colleen Schweitzer (Fr., Highlands Park, Colo./Highlands Ranch) (2:20.04) to garner a 1-3 finish in the 200-yard breaststroke. Gunenc swam 2:01.64, her fastest time of the season, to finish third in the 200-yard butterfly. Her time qualifies as a NCAA `B’ qualifying time.
Ohio State completed the meet with a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Ohio State’s `A’ relay of Buelens, Chan, Rennebohm and Lund stopped the clock just ahead of Penn State’s `B’ team in a time of 1:37.12, for second place.
