No. 23 Women’s Volleyball Wins Buckeye Invitational with 3-0 victory over Northern Illinois – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 23rd ranked Ohio State (6-0) women’s volleyball team defeated Northern Illinois (4-3), 3-0, (30-17, 30-23, 30-16) to win the Buckeye Invitational Sunday in St. John Arena. OSU’s Ami Stevens (Jr., Centerburg, Ohio) scored a match-high 14.5 points for the Buckeyes with 12 kills, two ace serves and an assist block. Huskie Laura Baetzel scored a team-high 10 points on 10 kills for Northern Illinois. Ohio State won the Buckeye Invitational with a 3-0 record over Northern Illinois, Lehigh and Iona. The Huskies finished 2-1 with Iona 1-2 and Lehigh 0-3.
The Buckeyes trailed 2-1 in game one before kills from Marisa Main (Sr., Louisville, Ky.) and Danielle Meyer (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and an ace serve by Stevens to take a 4-2 lead. At 7-5, Ohio State scored seven straight points to open a 14-5 lead. Briana McCarthy (Sr./Jr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) contributed two kills in the run with Meyer and Felicia Jones (Sr., Concord, Ont.) adding one each. A McCarthy-Jones block and two NIU errors added to the run. At 28-17, a McCarthy kill set game point and Stevens closed out the game at 30-17 with a kill. Ohio State hit .405 for the game to .029 for Northern Illinois.
Ohio State took an early 3-1 lead in game two, but an Irene Johnson kill and two OSU errors gave the Huskies a 4-3 lead. A NIU error, an ace serve by Stevens and a Kristen Dozier (Fr., Sandy Spring, Md.) kill gave OSU a 6-4 lead. At 6-5, a Dozier kill, a Meyer solo block and a Meyer-Jones-Main block opened a 9-5 lead for the Buckeyes. A Huskie error set game point for OSU at 29-20. A Buckeye error, a kill from Amy Ward and a solo block by Johnson stopped three game points before a Dozier kill ended the game at 30-23 giving the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead in the match. For the game, Ohio State hit .294 to .093 for Northern Illinois. Tied at two in game three, a Stevens kill, a Dozier-Main block and a Huskie error gave OSU a 5-2 lead. At 5-3, kills from Main and Stevens, two kills from Meyer and a Dozier ace serve opened a 10-3 lead. A 7-4 Buckeye run opened an 11-point lead for OSU at 17-6. At 26-16, a NIU error, a Stevens kill, a McCarthy-Meghan Simons (Fr., Carroll, Ohio) block set match point at 29-16. A Kill from Stevens closed out the game at 30-16, giving OSU a 3-0 victory. The Buckeyes hit .405 for the game to -.088 for Northern Illinois.
For the match, Ohio State hit .370 to .018 for Northern Illinois. The Buckeyes had a 51-29 advantage in kills and a 9-0 edge in ace serves. Ashley Kiel (Sr., Allenton, Wis.) had a match-high three ace serves for the Buckeyes. OSU gave up 10 service errors to three for NIU. Defensively, OSU had a 47-34 advantage in digs with OSU’s Stevens recording a match-high 13. At the net, the Buckeyes had a 10.5 to three edge in team blocks. Buckeye Dozier collected a match-high five blocks with two solos and three assists. OSU’s Main posted 36 assists in the match while NIU’s Mandi Caputo recorded 27.
Ohio State continues play at home next Friday when they host the Sports Imports Classic. Friday’s matches have Michigan State facing Arizona State at 4:30 p.m. with the Buckeyes hosting Tennessee Tech at 7 p.m. Saturday Tennessee Tech faces Michigan State at 3:30 p.m. with Ohio State hosting Arizona State at 6 p.m.
