Women’s Tennis Completes Opening Day of Action at Cissie Leary Invite and Deacon Classic – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team traveled to two tournaments this weekend. Three Buckeyes are participating in the Cissie Leary Invitational hosted by Penn in Philadelphia, while five journeyed to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the Deacon Classic hosted by Wake Forest. Play continues at both tournaments through Sunday.
At the Cissie Leary Invitational, sophomore Angela DiPastina (Titusville, N.J./Hun School of Princeton) opened the tournament with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lauren Shearer of Columbia in the round of 64. DiPastina was then defeated by Stephanie Schnitter of Harvard, a 9-16 seed, in the round of 32 (6-1, 6-0). Sophomore Caitlin O’Keefe (Troy, Mich./Troy), a 5-8 seed, had a bye in the first round and was defeated by Penn’s Alexi Plukas in a tight match in the round of 32, 7-6 (8), 2-6, 10-6. The third Buckeye, Sonia Ruzimovsky (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Technical), fell to Princeton’s Blakely Ashley in a super tiebreaker (4-6, 7-6 (6), 10-7), in the opening round.
In doubles, the tandem of O’Keefe and Ruzimovsky, after a first-round bye as a 5-8 seed, downed Karina Chiarelli and Mikayla Rogers of Minnesota, 8-1, in the round of 16.
At the Deacon Classic, sophomore Julie Voss (San Angelo, Texas/St. Stephen’s Academy) led the Buckeyes with a first-round win in Flight B singles, downing Masha Ilina of East Tennessee in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2. Two other Buckeyes, Julie Blackmore (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and Kristin Messmer (Lutherville, Md./McDonogh), lost in three sets in the round of 16. Blackmore was defeated by Olga Votavova of Syracuse, 6-7, 7-5, 6-3, in Flight A while Messmer was defeated by ETSU’s Elena Volobueva, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, in Flight C. In doubles, the tandem of Voss and Messmer had a first-round bye and then downed Lipton and Suignard of Syracuse, 8-2, in the round of 8. Blackmore and Ally Mueller (Roswell, Ga./New Braunfels (Texas) posted an 8-5 win over ETSU’s Batsula and Byrne in the round 16. The Buckeye duo then lost to WFU’s Hirsch and Poske, 8-2, in the round of 8.
