No. 15 Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Youngstown State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 15th ranked Ohio State (10-0) women’s volleyball team defeated Youngstown State (6-6), 3-0 (30-18, 30-15, 30-25) Wednesday evening at the Beeghly Center on the Youngstown State campus. OSU’s Anna Szerszen (Fr., Conflans Ste Hne, France) scored a match-high 12 points in the match with Briana McCarthy (Sr./Jr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) adding 11.5 points and Danielle Meyer (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) 10.5. Szerszen had 10 kills an ace serve and two assist blocks. McCarthy had 10 kills and three assist blocks while Meyer recorded 10 kills and an assist block. Youngstown State’s Ruth Boscaljon scored a team-high 11 points with nine kills and four assist blocks.
Game one opened with four straight YSU errors. At 4-1, kills by Szerszen and Meyer took the lead to 6-1. Leading, 12-6, Buckeye kills by Meghan Simons (Fr., Carroll, Ohio), Szerszen and two by McCarthy opened up a 10-point lead at 16-6. Ohio State continued to build the lead and with a Meyer kill reached game point at 29-17. YSU’s Karla Everhart stopped the game point with a kill at 29-18. Meyer’s sixth kill of the game ended the game at 30-18. The Buckeyes hit .472 for the game to .195 for Youngstown State.
Game two opened with an OSU error. A Simons kill tied the game at one. A Boscaljon kill made it 2-1 Penguins. A second Simons kill tied the game at two. Ami Stevens (Jr., Centerburg, Ohio) then served 12 straight points to give Ohio State a 14-2 lead. The run began with a McCarthy kill. Two ace serves by Stevens made it 5-2. A McCarthy-Kristen Dozier (Fr., Sandy Spring, Md.), a YSU error with kills by Szerszen and Dozier made the lead, 9-2. The run continued with a Penguin error, a McCarthy kill, a Stevens ace serve and two more YSU errors to reach 14-2. At 28-14, a kill by Simons set game point at 29-14. A Kaitlin O’Hara kill stopped the game point, but a YSU error ended the game at 30-15 to give Ohio State a 2-0 lead. The Buckeyes hit .500 for the game to .028 for Youngstown State.
Ohio State opened game three by scoring the first six points. The run contained Buckeye kills by Dozier, Main and Meyer and three Penguin errors. Two OSU errors made it 6-2. Ohio State took the lead to 10-2 with two kills by Dozier and one from Simons and a Youngstown State error. At 15-8, two OSU errors and a Ebony Barbosa solo block cut the lead to five at 15-10. At 25-20, a Buckeye error and a YSU block by Boscaljon and Jessica Fraley made it 25-22. An OSU kill by Jones and a YSU kill by Cari Leslie made the score 26-23. The Penguins cut the lead to two at 26-24 with a Karla Everhart-Boscaljon block. OSU, with a McCarthy kill and a block by Simons and McCarthy took the lead to four at 28-24. Youngstown State cut the lead to three at 28-25 with a Boscaljon kill. A Szerszen kill set match point at 29-25 and Szerszen ended the game with a kill for a 30-25 game three win giving the Buckeyes a 3-0 match win. Ohio State hit .333 for the game to .118 for Youngstown State.
For the match, the Buckeyes hit .424 to Youngstown State’s .117. Ohio State had a 54-37 advantage in kills and served five ace serves while YSU did not score an ace. OSU’s Stevens had a match-high four aces to equal her career-high. Each squad had six service errors. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 39-32 margin in digs with Stevens recording a match-high 11. At the net, Ohio State edge Youngstown State in team blocks, 6-5. OSU’s Dozier and YSU’s Boscaljon each picked up a match-high four assist blocks. Buckeye setter Main collected a match-high 40 assists in the contest while Youngstown State’s Everhart had 29.
Ohio State will now open the Big Ten Conference league play next Wednesday at No. 2 Penn State (8-0) at 8 p.m. The match will be carried live by CSTV (College Sports Television).
