COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 23rd ranked Ohio State (4-0) women’s volleyball team defeated Lehigh (0-4), 3-0 (30-11, 30-6, 30-16) in first round play of the Buckeye Invitational. OSU’s Danielle Meyer (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) had a match-high 15.5 points with 12 kills (.550), two ace serves, a solo block and an assist block. Lehigh’s Michelle Schwendenmann had a team-high 5.5 points with four kills, an ace serve and an assist block.
Ohio State hit .521 for the match to -.114 for Lehigh. The Buckeyes had a 43-15 advantage in kills and produced 14 ace serves to one for the Mountain Hawks. The Buckeyes had seven service errors to five for Lehigh. Defensively, Ohio State had a 34-22 edge in digs with Meyer recording a match-high 13 and Ashley Kiel (Sr., Allenton, Wis.) 10. At the net, OSU had three team blocks to one for Lehigh. Meyer had a team-high two blocks. Buckeye setter Marisa Main (Sr., Louisville, Ky.) had 29 assists in the match while Sarah Wolfe had nine for Lehigh.
NORTHERN ILLINOIS DEFEATS IONA, 3-0 (30-23, 30-11, 35-33)
NIU’s Kate McCullagh had a match-high 28 points as Northern Illinois (3-1) defeated Iona (1-3), 3-0 (30-23, 30-11, 35-33) in the second match of the Buckeye Invitation. McCullagh had 26 kills and four assist blocks for the Huskies. Megan Dailey of Iona scored a team-high 11 points with 11 kills.
Northern Illinois hit .350 for the game to .127 for Iona. The Huskies had a 58-29 edge in kills while Iona had an 11-8 advantage in ace serves. The Huskies gave up six service errors to five for Iona. Defensively, Northern Illinois had a 51 to 34 margin in digs with Huskie Gina Guide recording a match-high 24. Northern Illinois have five total blocks in the match while Iona had none. McCullagh recorded a match-high four assist blocks. Northern Illinois setter Mandi Caputo had 43 assists in the match to 23 for Beth Holly for Iona. Play continues in the Buckeye Invitational Friday when Northern Illinois faces Lehigh at 5 p.m. and Ohio State hosts Iona at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena.
