COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State will be well-represented at the 2006 United States Track and Field Championships this week in Indianapolis. Several former Buckeye All-Americans will vie for U.S. titles during competition Thursday-Sunday at IUPUI’s Michael A. Carroll Stadium.
The men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase will feature a pair of Buckeyes, including the program’s most-recent All-American. Brian Olinger (2002-06), who earlier this month finished fifth in the NCAA steeple final, enters the U.S. event with the third-fastest entry time of 8:19.56. Olinger clocked that mark last July at a meet in Belgium. Robert Gary (1993-96), Olinger’s distance coach at OSU, falls in just behind his athlete in the No. 4 position with an entry time of 8:24.16. Gary is a two-time Olympian. He competed in the 1996 Atlanta Games and the 2004 Athens Games. Both runners will run for Team Reebok. The first round of the men’s steeple is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. Friday.
Rob Myers (2001-2004) also will represent the Ohio State distance program. He will run in the men’s 1,500 meters at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Myers, who finished third at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 1,500m, has the second-best entry time at 3:34.89. Myers also will run for Team Reebok.
Also on the track, former OSU All-American Joel Brown (2001-04) will run in the men’s 110-meter hurdles. A past Big Ten champion in the event, Brown took fourth place in the 110m hurdles at the USATF event last year. This season, Brown holds the fourth-fastest entry time at 13.22. The first round of the 110m hurdles is slated for a 4:05 start Saturday.
In field events, two-time national champion Dan Taylor will throw in the finals of the shot put at 6:40 p.m. Friday. Taylor, a nine-time All-American at OSU from 2001-04, trails only 2005 U.S. Champion Christian Cantwell and 2004 Olympians Adam Nelson and Reese Hoffa and with an entry mark of 71 feet, 3/4 inches. Taylor, the 2004 NCAA Indoor Shot Put winner, throws for Nike. For the women in the field, Keturah Lofton (2002-06) recently completed her Ohio State career as a three-time All-American. She will throw the hammer at 5 p.m. Friday. Lofton, who won the 2004 Big Ten hammer title, enters with a top throw of 209-1.
