Ohio State Tops Oakland, 8-1, in Game One – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A five-run third inning, aided by four Oakland errors, and another solid outing by Ohio State freshman pitcher Kim Reeder gave the Buckeye softball team an 8-1 win Wednesday in the first game of a doubleheader at Buckeye Field. Ohio State (36-18, 11-5 Big Ten) improves to 20-2 at home this season, including 12-0 in non-conference games. Oakland (25-25, 11-9 Mid-Continent Conference) tallied its lone run in the third inning.
Ohio State improves to 17-3 in its last 20 games and collected 11 hits, improving on its .344 average at Buckeye Field this season entering the game.
Reeder (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.) struck out seven and scattered four hits in six innings, improving to 16-8, which ties the OSU record for wins by a freshman held by Kristi DeVries, now an assistant coach for the Buckeyes, who won 16 as a freshman in 2001. Reeder has won 12 of her last 15 decisions and moves into second-place in strikeouts (146) and innings pitched (164.2) all-time among OSU freshmen.
OSU junior Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) went 2-for-4 and stole her Big Ten-leading 25th base of the season, which gives her 57 for her career, third-most all-time at Ohio State.
The Buckeyes knocked five singles in their five-run third inning, with junior Lauren Daykin (Melbourne, Australia/Manatee C.C., Fla.) delivering a two-RBI hit and Koyano adding another RBI.
Sophomore Brittany Vanderink (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood), the current Big Ten Player of the Week, went 1-for-2 to extend her career-best hitting streak to nine games, during which time she is hitting .563 (18-for-32). Junior Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) went 2-for-3 with a double, upping her average to .418 (23-for-55) at Buckeye Field.
Freshman Courtney Pruner (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) pitched a one-hit, one-strikeout seventh inning to finish off the Golden Grizzlies.
Senior Billie Carder (Celina, Ohio/Celina) hit an RBI single in the first inning to score Koyano, who had singled, to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead. Koyano then singled home senior Chelsea Baker (Gahanna, Ohio/DeSales) in the second inning to put the Buckeyes up, 2-0.
Junior Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) went 1-for-2 with a walk to improver her average to .464 (13-for-28) in her last nine games and to a team-best .421 (24-for-57) at Buckeye Field
Ohio State and Oakland will meet in game two at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
