Men’s Team in First Place at 2006 Big Ten Championships, Women Third – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in Day 1 action at the 2006 Big Ten Outdoor Championships Friday at Michigan State’s Ralph Young Facility in East Lansing, Mich. Brian Olinger headlined the day for Ohio State by winning his second career Big Ten outdoor title in the 10,000-meter run.
In team scores, Ohio State leads the men’s standings with 17 points, ahead of defending team champ Wisconsin (15) and Indiana (14). The Buckeyes are tied with Penn State for third among the women’s leaders with 11 team points. Minnesota is the women’s leader after Day No. 1 at 33.5 points.
Olinger clocked a career-best 28:45.59 to best the 10K field and narrowly missed the Big Ten championship meet record of 28:45.25. Olinger, a two-time All-American and 2004 league champ in the 5K, posted 10 team points for the Buckeyes with his win. Earlier this season, Olinger established the OSU 10K record of 28:57.68 at Stanford. The senior from Fresno, Ohio will vie for his third career Big Ten crown in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Buckeye sophomore John Ealy also added points in the 10K with a seventh-place time of 29:47.8.
Keturah Lofton, a senior who snapped her own OSU record in the hammer last week at the Jesse Owens Track Classic, was the big scorer for the women’s team. The 2004 Big Ten hammer champion posted a runner-up mark of 192 feet, 10 inches in the event Friday. Freshman Veronica Jatsek also tallied team points with a heave of 170-6.
In the men’s hammer, sophomores Dave Ebersole and Lenny Jatsek, the Big Ten weight throw champ indoors, each scored team points for the Buckeyes. Ebersole finished sixth at a length of 174 feet, 7 inches. He bested Jatsek, who took seventh, by just three inches at 174-4.
