Three Buckeye Swimmers Qualify for 2006 NCAA Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three members of the Ohio State women’s swimming team have qualified for the 2006 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Athens, Ga., March 16-18. Nicole Maglich, Griet Buelens and Gulsah Gunenc will be swimming a combined four events.
Buelens (So., Kapelle, Belgium/Ursulinen Mechelen) will be competing in three events, the most of the three Buckeyes traveling. She will compete in both the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events, as well as the 200-yard butterfly. In the 200-yard freestyle, her NCAA “B” cut time of 1:48.61 was recorded at the 2006 Big Ten Championships and is the second-fastest time in the event for the team this season. Her 500-yard freestyle time holds the same accolades, ranking second this season with 4:49.29, clocked at the conference championships. In the 200-yard butterfly, Buelens is ranked 26th nationally, following her finish at the Big Ten championships with a time of 1:59.82.
Maglich (Sr., Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota) will join Buelens in two events. In the 200-yard freestyle, Maglich is ranked 18th in the nation with a time of 1:47.79 recorded at the 2006 Big Ten Championships. In the 500-yard freestyle, Maglich recorded a 4:46.32 at the Ohio State Swimming and Diving Invitational. Both times were the fastest for the team this season.
Gunenc (Jr., Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian) will compete in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly. In both events, she broke the Ohio State school record at the 2006 Big Ten Championships. In the 100-yard butterfly, her qualifying time was recorded at 54.92, while her time in the 200-yard butterfly was 1:58.54. In the 200-yard butterfly, she is ranked 11th.
