Ohio State Divers To Compete at NCAA Zone Diving Regional Competition – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Four members of the Ohio State diving squad will compete at the 2006 NCAA Zone C Diving Qualifying Meet, this weekend at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The women divers will attempt to qualify for the NCAA championship, March 16-18, in Athens, Ga., while the men will attempt to qualify for the NCAA championships, March 23-25, in Atlanta, Ga.
Three divers from the men’s team will be competing. Kellen Harkness (Jr., Puyallup, Wash./Cascade Christian) hopes to clinch his second trip to the NCAA championships after competing on both boards at the event last year. Harkness earned Second Team All-Big Ten accolades this season after finishing second on the 3-meter springboard with a score of 394.30 and an eighth-place finish on the 1-meter with a score of 304.95. At the qualifying meet last season, Harkness finished ninth and fourth on the 1- and 3-meter, respectively. At his first trip to the NCAA championships, he finished 22nd in both events.
Marc Dreyer (Jr., Port Elisabeth, South Africa/Grey) and Wes Wieser (Fr., Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) will be competing for a chance at their first NCAA championships. Dreyer finished 14th on the 3-meter at the conference meet with a score of 279.90, while Weiser was only two places behind, totaling 276.70 in the event. Harkness holds the team’s season-high score on the 3-meter, with a score of 362.47, while Weiser has the 1-meter season-high with 353.63.
Representing the women’s diving team will be Julie Broms (So., Springfield, Ill./North Central). Broms finished third on the 3-meter (346.35) and 14th on the 1-meter (251.80) at the 2006 Big Ten Championships. At the qualifying event last season, Broms finished fourth on the 3-meter and 11th on the 1-meter event. She qualified for the NCAA championships, where she finished ninth with a score of 477.25 on the 3-meter and 16th (263.60) on the 1-meter. Admission to the NCAA Zone Qualifying meet is free. Competition begins Friday at 11 a.m. with the 1-meter for the women and the 3-meter for the men.
