Ohio State Drops Big Ten Opener at Indiana, 4-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana’s Mariangee Bogado held the Ohio State softball team to four hits and one run as the host Hoosiers defeated the Buckeyes, 4-1, Friday in the Big Ten opener for both teams. Ohio State (16-13, 0-1 Big Ten) got an RBI single by Christina Douglas in the fifth inning but Indiana (16-11-1, 1-0 Big Ten) scored twice in the fourth and fifth innings.
Indiana, which has already topped its win total from last season when the Hoosiers went 13-41, totaled eight hits and capitalized on three Ohio State errors.
After Indiana scored twice on a single by Rachel Terry in the fourth inning, Ohio State got one run back on a two-out RBI single to centerfield in the top of the fifth by Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson). The Hoosiers pulled away in their half of the fifth, however, on a two-run home run by Lauren Hines, who entered the game with the Big Ten’s second-best batting average at .432. The homer was Hines’ fourth of the season.
Ohio State had won nine of the last 10 games against Indiana, but Bogado struck out eight Buckeyes to improve to 9-4 on the season. The Hoosiers are now 11-3 in their last 14 games, which includes wins over No. 15 Nebraska and No. 25 North Carolina, thanks in large part to Bogado, the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week two weeks ago who set a school record with 23 strikeouts against South Florida earlier this season.
OSU loaded the bases with two outs in the second inning on three Bogado walks, but the IU senior was able to get the third out before allowing a run. An infield single in the top of the fourth inning by OSU senior Stacy Hibma (Buena Park, Calif./Valley Christian) broke up Bogado’s no-hitter. Junior Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) singled two batters later and would come home on the RBI single by Douglas.
Junior pitcher Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson), who had won five of her last six decisions entering the game, suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs in five innings to see her record slip to 9-7. Freshman Courtney Pruner (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) pitched the final inning, allowing one hit in her first action in the circle since March 5.
Ohio State will face Indiana at 1 p.m. Saturday before traveling to West Lafayette for a doubleheader at Purdue Sunday.
