Women’s Tennis Falls to Iowa, 4-3 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team was defeated by Iowa, 4-3, Sunday in Jesse Owens West Tennis Center. The Buckeyes fall to 9-6 on the year and 1-1 in Big Ten play, Iowa improves to 10-3 and 2-0 in conference action.
Iowa swept the doubles matches, with two tiebreaker wins, to earn the doubles point. At No. 2, Sonia Ruzimovsky (Jr., Brooklyn N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) and Angela DiPastina (Fr., Titusville, N.J.) were defeated by Hawkeyes Hillary Mintz and Kayla Berry, 8-3. The Ohio State tandem of O’Keefe (So., Troy, Mich./Troy) and Julie Blackmore (Fr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) then lost at No. 1 to Meg Racette and Jacqueline Lee, 9-8 (2), and Buckeyes Ciara Finucane (Jr., Dublin, Ireland/Georgia Southern) and Kristin Messmer (Jr., Lutherville, Md./McDonogh) were downed by Mili Veselinovic and Krissy Dowlin, 9-8 (4) at the third spot.
Buckeye Messmer opened singles play with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Berry at the No. 5 position, followed by Finucane’s loss to IU’s Lee at No. 4, 6-4, 6-1. DiPastina tied the match at 2-all with a win over Merel Beelen, 7-6, 6-3. The Hawkeyes then won the next two matches off the court to clinch the match victory. At No. 1, Iowa’s No. 33-ranked Racette downed O’Keefe, 6-1, 6-0, while at No. 3 Veselinovic beat Blackmore, 6-4, 6-1. Ohio State’s Ruzimovsky won the final match of the day at No. 2, as she defeated Mintz in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5). The Buckeyes will hit the road for two matches next weekend. The squad will play at Purdue at 1 p.m. April 1 in West Lafayette, Ind., and at Illinois at 11 a.m. April 2 in Champaign, Ill.
