COLUMBUS, Ohio – Host Cal State Fullerton topped the Ohio State softball team, 4-0, in the first game of a double-header in Los Angeles Saturday. The loss snaps a seven-game winning streak for the Buckeyes, who fall to 16-11, while Fullerton improves to 18-16.
Ohio State junior pitcher Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) struck out nine Titans and allowed just four hits, but Fullerton scored a run in both the fourth and fifth inning and added two more in the sixth on back-to-back solo home runs.
Juarez, who pitched her first career no-hitter yesterday and went over the 400 strikeout plateau, sees her record slip to 9-6 and has her personal five-game winning streak in the circle come to an end.
Junior Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) went 2-for-2 with a double and a walk to lead the Ohio State offense. In Schwab’s last 12 games she is hitting .472 (17-for-36).
Ohio State loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning on a walk by Juarez, a single by senior Billie Carder (Celina, Ohio/Celina) and walk by junior Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut), but Fullerton pitcher Candace Baker (13-5) was able to work out of the jam.
Fullerton, coming off a two-game split at home against No. 16 Northwestern Thursday, has eight starters back from its 2005 team that went 30-21 and made the program’s 21st NCAA tournament appearance.
OSU senior Chelsea Baker (Gahanna, Ohio/DeSales) hit her third double of the season in the fifth inning but was stranded at second base. Koyano’s walk was the 69th of her career, which gives her sole possession of fourth place on the OSU career walks list. Stacy Roth (1999-02) ranks third with 70.
Ohio State and Fullerton will meet in game-two Saturday at 2:30 p.m. (PST).
