Three Buckeyes Reach Finals on Second Day of Zone Qualifying – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three Ohio State divers competed in the finals of their events Saturday on the second day of competition at the 2006 NCAA Zone C Diving Qualifying Meet hosted by Ohio State at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The top 18 divers in the preliminaries qualify for the zone finals with those continuing on to the NCAA championships determined at the end of competition. The women divers are attempting to qualify for the NCAA championship, March 16-18, in Athens, Ga., while the men are competing to qualify for the NCAA championships, March 23-25, in Atlanta, Ga.
Two Ohio State men competed in the 1-meter competition. Kellen Harkness (Jr., Puyallup, Wash./Cascade Christian) entered into the finals of the event in the No. 2 spot, posting a score of 309.70 in preliminary competition. Harkness’ dives totaled 618.40 for third place making him the highest Buckeyes finisher for the second-consecutive day. Marc Dreyer (Jr., Port Elisabeth, South Africa/Grey) reached the Top 18 for the second time during the meet, finishing 13th with 526.25 points. He recorded a score of 276.95 during preliminaries.
Julie Broms (So., Springfield, Ill./North Central) was fifth entering into the finals, after posting a score of 296.30 in the preliminaries of the 1-meter springboard. During the finals, Broms final six dives accumulated 280.7 to total 577 for the day. The score earned her the No. 8 spot. Nacilea Underwood of Iowa was the event with 658.30 points.
Admission to the NCAA Zone Qualifying meet is free. Competition continues tomorrow at 11 a.m. with the platform event for both men and women. A complete schedule, directions to the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion and live scoring is available at ohiostatebuckeyes.com.
