Columbus, Ohio — The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams will compete in 2006 Iowa State Classic on Friday and Saturday Feb. 10 -11in Ames, Iowa. The distance team will also send some of its runners to the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash.

WOMEN’S 4×400 RELAY SETS SCHOOL RECORD
In the second day of the Sixth Annual New Balance Invite, the women’s relay team raced to a school record time of 3:41.18 to take sixth place in a field that included LSU, South Carolina, Baylor and Texas A&M. LSU won the event in 3:34.15. Ohio State freshman Chandra Krempel handled the lead leg for the Buckeyes and passed the baton off to Jenna Harris and Jessica Jones for the middle legs. Freshman Ayrizanna Favours anchored the team to the record-setting time that tops the 3:42.09 mark set Feb. 21, 1999 on a relay squad led by All-American Dominique Calloway (1998-99). HARRIS DOES IT AGAIN
Junior Jenna Harris looked to follow up a strong 2005 showing in New York when she captured second place in the collegiate 60-meter dash at the Millrose Games in Madison Square Garden. She started Friday by winning Heat 4 of the 60m in a season-best time of 7.42, which qualified for her second straight appearance in the Millrose 60m. Later in MSG, Harris placed sixth in the collegiate section in 7.54.
“SEE”ING IS BELIEVING
Freshman Jeff See ran his first mile of the season at the 2006 New Balance Collegiate Invitational. See did not disappoint, he came in fourth with a time of 4:03.75. This mark was good enough to provisionally qualify him for the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships. See’s times also is the fourth best in Ohio State indoor history. His time is also the second best time by a freshman in Ohio State history. The record for a freshman is 4:03.70 which is well within See reach this season by Rob Myers (2001-04) in 2001.
RECAPPING THE 2006 NEW BALANCE COLLEGIATE INVITATIONAL AND THE AKRON OPEN
The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams competed Friday in the opening session of the 2006 New Balance Collegiate Invitational held at The Armory Track and Field Center in New York City. Several Buckeyes advanced through preliminary races Friday.
Freshman Ayrizanna Favours also cleared prelim rounds in the 400m, winning her heat in 54.67, the seventh-best time of the early rounds. For the men, reigning Big Ten Indoor Freshman of the Year Tony Cole advanced through the prelims of the 60m, timing a 6.87 in Heat 8. Freshman Elon Simms kicked off the day for the men with an impressive eighth-place showing in the 500m, turning in a time of 1:04.08.
The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in two meets Saturday as members of each team participated in either the Akron Open in Akron, Ohio or the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York City.
Jeff See, a freshman and the reigning high school national champion in the mile, placed fourth in the men’s mile championships in a time of 4:03.75. In his collegiate mile debut, See’s mark ranks fourth all-time at Ohio State. Senior and returning All-American Brian Olinger also ran in the men’s 3,000-meter championship. Results for the 3K were not available at the time of this release.
In the women’s field events, Jessica Stringer placed third in the high jump championships, narrowly missing a season-best leap at 5 feet, 10 inches. Freshman Brandon Cathcart, also a national champion in the triple jump at the scholastic level, took eighth-place in the triple jump Saturday at 47-7 ¾.
At Akron, Ohio State’s men’s and women’s throws teams won three of the four throwing events. Sophomore Lenny Jatsek claimed the men’s weight throw with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 67 feet, 2 ¼ inches. He also captured third in the shot put at a career-best 57-10 ¾. David Ebersole also pitched in with a third-place mark of 60-11 ½ in the weight.
The women’s throwers swept the shot and weight. Two-time All-American and former Big Ten champ Keturah Lofton grabbed the top spot in the weight at 65-9 ½, while freshman Janine Zylinski finished first in the shot put with a career-long throw of 50-2 1/2.
REVISITING THE 2005 IOWA STATE CLASSIC
The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams participated in the second and final day of events at the 14th annual Iowa State Classic Friday in Ames, Iowa. Sophomore sprinter Jenna Harris led the Buckeyes with a winning time in the 60-meter dash.
Harris, a native of Somerset, N.J., completed an outstanding meet by setting a personal-best for the second straight day. After posting a runner-up finish in the 200-meter dash Friday night in 24.16, Harris claimed the 60-meter title, clocking a 7.42. Both of her times in the 60 and 200m serve as provisional qualifiers to the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships. Last week, Harris placed second in the 60m at the Millrose Games in Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, New York.
Senior jumper Shayla Moore added another Top 5 finish for the women’s team with a fourth-place leap of 41 feet, 6 1/2 inches in the triple jump. Sophomore Jessica Stringer also recorded a Top 5, tying for third in the high jump with a 5-7 measure. Also in the field events, senior Shelaine Larson took 12th in the women’s shot put at a length of 47-0 3/4.
For the men, freshman jumper Marios Iacovou completed the high jump in sixth place, clearing the bar at 6-10 1/4. On the track, junior Todd Dutch reached the finals of the men’s 60m with a 6.84 preliminary time before he crossed the finish line in 6.86 to take 13th in the final. In the 400m, senior John Morris registered a Top 20 finish with a time of 48.04.
In the distance events, returning All-American Aaron Fisher placed 10th in the 3,000-meter run in 8:15.90, while senior Jacob McCauley timed a season-best 4:10.99 in the mile for an 18th-place standing.
In the relays, the women posted a season-best 3:48.85 to place 13th, while the men also combined for a top time this season in 3:12.65 to take 11th.
BUCKEYES IN The BIG TEN RANKS
Several Buckeyes own Top 5 marks in the Big Ten this season. For the men on the track, senior Todd Dutch is in the Top 5 in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.83. Joe Gourley holds the third best time in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:51.68. Jeff See, with his performance at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational, now is second in the Big Ten in the mile with a time of 4:03.75. His time is the fourth-best in Ohio State history and best time for a freshman in the Big Ten this season. See’s time also provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Brian Olinger is third in the Big Ten in the 3,000m with a time of 8:02.21. His time also has provisionally qualified Olinger for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
In the field, Brandon Carhcart has the sixth-best triple jump in Big Ten this season, and the best jump by freshman with a mark of 49-8 1/4. Sophomore, Lenny Jatsek has the second-longest weight throw in the Big Ten this season. Jatsek’s toss of 67-5 1/4 provisionally qualified him for the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships.
On the women’s end, Jenna Harris(7.42) and Ayrizanna Favours(7.45) have the second and third 60m times in the Big Ten, respectively. Harris also is fourth in the 200m with a time of 24.14. Favours has the fastest time for a freshman this season in the 200m with a mark of 24.34. Favours also is fourth in the Big Ten this season in the 400m with a time of 54.67. Junior Melanie Price is fifth in the 1,000m run with a time of 2:58.81. The women’s 4x400m relay is third in the Big Ten with a time of 3:41.18.
In the field for the women, Jessica Stringer is third in the Big Ten this season in the high jump. Her leap of 5-10 3/4 at Indiana Jan. 21 provisionally quailfied her for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Janine Zylinski has the second-best shot put toss this season with a mark of 50-2 1/4. In the weight throw Keturah Lofton has the second best throw in the Big Ten. Lofton’s throw of 67-2 1/2 in the opening meet at Kentucky Jan. 14 also provisionally quaified her for the NCAA championships.
FRESHMAN FAVOURS OFF IN A FLASH
Freshman Ayrizanna Favours has started her Ohio State career in style. Favours started the season with a third-place finish in the 400m at the Kentucky Invitational. In her next meet Favours, in Indiana, took second in the 400m in a time of 54.96. In her first home meet, Favours gave the home crowd a lot to cheer about as she won the 55m() and 200m().
OLINGER AT IT AGAIN
Senior Brian Olinger ran his first 3,000-meter run of the season last week in the New Balance Collegiate Invitational. Even with a mild case of the flu, Olinger still rewrote the Ohio State record books with his time of 8:02.21, a mark that ranks fourth in Buckeye history. Olinger now holds the second and fourth best times in Ohio State indoor history in the 3,000m. Olinger still is after the record for the best 3,000m which is currently held by Ohio State distance coach Robert Gary.
JATSEK SCORES BIG TEN MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK OF JAN. 25
Sophomore thrower Lenny Jatsek was named Athlete of the Week in an announcement made by the Big Ten Jan. 25. Saturday at the Indiana Invitational, Jatsek won the men’s weight throw event and placed fourth in the shot put.
With his winning weight mark of 65 feet, 9 ½ inches Saturday, Jatsek provisionally qualified for the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships and posted the league’s second-best mark in the event this season. Jatsek’s weight figure also moved him into the Top 5 in Ohio State’s all-time indoor performance list in the weight. Later Saturday, Jatsek added a fourth-place score in the shot put with a toss of 51-11.
Jatsek’s weekly honor contributes to Ohio State’s impressive run of Big Ten weekly honorees in the throws events. During the last three indoor seasons and last two outdoor campaigns, Buckeye men’s and women’s throwers have combined to win 14 conference athlete of the week awards.
STRINGER, JATSEK POST ALL-TIME MARKS AT INDIANA
At the Indiana Invite Jan. 21, two Buckeyes posted all-time Ohio State marks. Junior Jessica Stringer won the women’s high jump by clearing 5 feet, 7 3/4 inches to rank third all-time at OSU. Sophomore Lenny Jatsek heaved a mark of 65-9 1/2 to win the weight throw and now rates fifth all-time at OSU in the event.
LOFTON MAKES TRIUMPHANT RETURN
After missing all of last season, senior thrower Keturah Lofton has made a triumphant return to competition. The former Big Ten champion and two-time All-American won the weight throw at Kentucky and was runner-up at Indiana.
At the Kentucky Invite, Lofton tossed a provisional qualifier for the NCAA indoor championships, reaching a distance of 67-2 1/4. Her toss at Kentucky is also the second best toss in the Big Ten so far this season.
At Akron last week, Lofton took the top spot in the weight throw for her third weight win this season.
NOTABLE DEBUTS AT KENTUCKY
The men’s and women’s team 37 has freshman combined and several transfer student-athletes that will be making their Ohio State debut this season. Several did so last weekend at the Kentucky Invitational.
For the men, Jeff See, last year’s high school national champion in the mile, made his track and field debut for the Buckeyes, taking fourth in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 8:15.14. In the field, Bryan Chard took 10th-place in the pole vault with a height of 14-07 1/4. Brandon Cathcart, last year’s high school national champion in the triple jump, took fourth place in the triple with a distance of 49-8 1/4. Adam Wilhelm and Elon Simms both made their Ohio State debuts in the 400 meters with times of 49.49 and 49.61, respectively.
For the women, Ayrizonna Favours took third in the 400 meters with a time of 55.96. Transfer Veronica Vance made her first Ohio State apperence in two events the in long jump and the triple jump with leaps of 17-11 1/2 and 38-9 3/4, respectively.
COACH GARY AND OLINGER HONORED FOR OUTSTANDING EFFORTS IN 2005 CROSS COUNTRY SEASON
The NCAA announced its men’s cross country regional awards Saturday Nov. 19 prior to the 2005 National Championship meet Monday in Terre Haute, Ind. Ohio State head coach Robert Gary was named 2005 Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year, while senior co-captain Brian Olinger earned 2005 Great Lakes Runner of the Year honors.
Gary guided the Buckeyes to a second-place finish at the 2005 Big Ten Championships, a third-place team score at the 2005 NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships and an 11th place finish at the NCAA Championships. Olinger led the Ohio State pack in each of the races, taking 10th at Big Ten’s before winning the regional event Nov. 12.
For the season, Gary and Olinger also combined to lead Ohio State to three event team titles and an all-time best sixth-place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis in September.

The men’s and women’s team will return home for their second home meet of the season, the Scarlet and Gray Invitational Feb. 18-19.
