COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team (6-2; 0-0 Big Ten) returned home Saturday and defeated the Louisville Cardinals in a tight match, 4-3. The match was held at the Jesse Owens West Recreation Center in Columbus. The Buckeyes look to continue their winning ways as they face No. 28 Tennessee Sunday.
The Buckeyes dropped the first doubles match, but won the next two to earn the doubles point. At No. 1, the tandem of Caitlin O’Keefe (So., Troy, Mich./Troy) and Julie Blackmore (Fr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) was defeated by Maria Klokotzky and Robyn White, 8-3. At No. 2, Sonia Ruzimovsky (Jr., Brooklyn N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) and Angela DiPastina (Fr., Titusville, N.J.) dropped Suzanna Gracanin and Natalie Laszkowski, 8-5. At No. 3, Kristin Messmer (Jr., Lutherville, Md./McDonogh) and Ciara Finucane (Jr., Dublin, Ireland/Georgia Southern) defeated Bianca Gorbea and Stephania Velazquez by a score of 8-4.
The Buckeyes dropped three of the first four singles matches, but won the last two to defeat the Cardinals. At the No. 1 spot, O’Keefe was defeated by Klokotzky in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. At No. 2, Ruzimovsky defeated Gorbea, 6-1, 6-3. Blackmore was downed by White, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot. At No. 4, Gracanin defeated Finucane, 6-3, 6-2. DiPastina shut out Velazquez, 6-0, 6-0 for the victory at the No. 6 spot. At No. 5, in the last match of the day, Messmer dropped Laszkowski by a score of 6-3, 6-4 for the match-clinching victory.
The Buckeyes return to action Sunday as they play host to the No. 28-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers. The match will be held at 11 a.m. at the Jesse Owens West Recreation Center in Columbus.
