PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Freshman Courtney Pruner hit her third home run of the season to put the Ohio State softball team up early, but it was all UC-Santa Barbara after that as the Gauchos took a 10-1 victory in five innings Friday at the Palm Springs Classic at Big League Dreams Park. Ohio State falls to 5-6, while UCSB improves to 6-2.
UCSB scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning and added four more in the fourth. The Gauchos out-hit the Buckeyes just 8-6, but Santa Barbara smacked two RBI doubles and a bases-loaded triple to go along with five OSU walks and two errors.
Pruner (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) hit her solo shot to right field in the top o f the second inning and Ohio State held its 1-0 lead into the third inning before UCSB erupted for its season-high tying 10 runs. It had been 36 games, dating back to March 24 of last season, since Ohio State had allowed 10 runs in a game.
OSU junior Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) went 2-for-3 for the Buckeyes.
Following her 4.1 innings of no-hit relief against No.3 UCLA earlier Friday, freshman Kim Reeder (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.) started strong in the circle for the Buckeyes, limiting the Gauchos to one hit during the first two innings. In the bottom of the third inning, however, the Gauchos put together five hits and, helped by OSU’s two errors, scored six runs.
Pruner came on in relief for Ohio State in the third inning and pitched into the fourth before junior Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) worked the final two-thirds of that frame to end the UCSB offensive.
Ohio State will face Oregon at 10 a.m. Saturday before taking on No. 1 Arizona at 5:30.
