DeLAND, Fla. – Ohio State’s Jamee Juarez and Brittany Vanderink hit RBI singles in the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie and send the Buckeye softball team past host Stetson Sunday, 5-2, giving OSU head coach Linda Kalafatis her 300th win at Ohio State. The Buckeyes improve to 5-4 and snap a four game skid, while Stetson falls to 4-2.
The single by Juarez (Jr., La Puente, Calif./Wilson) put OSU up, 3-2, and the single by Vanderink (So., Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) brought home two runs to seal the win for the Buckeyes and freshman pitcher Kim Reeder (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.), who worked a perfect seventh inning to cap off a complete-game, seven strikeout performance. Reeder scattered seven hits and walked only one batter to improve her record to 2-1 on the season.
Kalafatis, in her 10th year at Ohio State, is already the program’s all-time wins leader and owns a career record of 573-328-2.
Ohio State took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning when freshman Courtney Pruner (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) hit a solo home run and junior Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) doubled, later scoring on an RBI single by senior Billie Carder (Celina, Ohio/Celina).
Stetson tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Buckeyes got their first three runners on base in the top of the seventh as juniors Lauren Daykin (Melbourne, Australia/Manatee C.C., Fla.) and Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) singled and Carder reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases. Juarez poked a single into right field to score pinch-runner Stephanie Hill (So., Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) and two batters later Vanderink singled up the middle to score Douglas and Carder.
Schwab also doubled in the fourth inning to end the game 2-for-3.
Ohio State will travel to the Palm Springs Classic next weekend in Palm Springs, Calif.
