COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team concluded the 2006 Big Ten Championships in seventh place with 258 points Saturday at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The Buckeyes were led by Gulsah Gunenc (Jr., Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian) who broke her second school record of the championships on the final day. Gunenc’s record-breaking time came in the 200-yard butterfly, in which she clocked in at 1:58.54. Her first school record was in the 100-yard butterfly, which she set Friday. Following the meet, Gunenc was named Second Team All-Big Ten for her 200-yard butterfly race.
Ohio State recorded 59 more points and jumped three spots from their finish last year at the conference championships. Penn State was crowned 2006 Big Ten Champion with 552 points, while Minnesota was second with 536.5 points.
Ohio State had two finalists in the 200-yard butterfly. Gunenc and Griet Buelens (So., Kapelle, Belgium/Ursulinen Mechelen) each placed in the Top 8 in the event. Gunenc was the runner-up after hitting the wall in school-record time of 1:58.54. Buelens finished fifth with 1:59.82. Gunenc’s time broke the 200-yard butterfly school record for the second time on the final day. She broke the record earlier in preliminary qualifying when she clocked in as the top qualifier in the event with a time of 1:58.80. The previous school-best (1:59.09) was held by Buelens since the 2005 Big Ten Championships. Both women recorded NCAA “B” qualifying times in the event during preliminary races and finals. It was the second time Gunenc broke a school record during the championships, as she broke the 18-year old record in the 100-yard freestyle Friday. “I’m really happy,” Gunenc said. “I was really excited because I was seeded first (after preliminary racing). I wanted to win it, but I broke a school record for the second time and I had my best time in the 200 fly. I’m really happy (with the race).”
Nicole Maglich (Sr., Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota) recorded an NCAA “B” qualifying time in the 1,650-yard freestyle. She swam the 66 laps in a time of 16:43.28, finishing in eighth place. Steph Fennell (Jr., Campbellville, Ontario/Milton District) was the highest-place finisher for the Buckeyes in the 200-yard backstroke. Her time of 2:02.18 was a season and lifetime-best time and earned a 12th-place finish.
Both Annie Rennebohm (So., Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and Erin Church (So., Morrow, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) were the highest Scarlet and Gray qualifiers in the 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard breaststroke, respectively. Each Buckeye recorded a lifetime-best time in their events. Rennebohm finished 20th, while Church finished 24th.
Elaine Chan (Fr., Hong Kong, China), Buelens, Rennebohm and Maglich closed out the championships with a NCAA “B” cut time in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The quartet pooled their talents for a season-best time of 3:24.21.
“They did great today with Gulsah breaking another school record,” Jeanne Fleck, Ohio State head coach, said. “Griet did great backing Gulsah up in that event. It’s hard to come back two years and win the event, so I’m really pleased with how she fought for it. I’m proud of everybody. The relay today was great. Annie had our fastest split in it this season. So it was great.”
The 200-, 400- and 800-yard freestyle relay teams recorded NCAA “B” qualifying times and a total of 19 individual NCAA “B” times were recorded among four Buckeyes in the championships. Buelens and Gunenc have each recorded six NCAA “B” times. Maglich notched five, while Chan claimed two NCAA “B” cut times. NCAA “B” times put the individual or relay team into consideration to compete at the 2006 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Athens, Ga. Ohio State recorded six school records and 43 lifetime-best times throughout the four-day event.
“The whole meet was a team effort,” Fleck said. “We broke six school records and it was awesome. We’ve never done that before. Julie (Broms) and Anesa (Beard) battling back from injury to do so well on the 3-meter. It was everybody. It was diving, it was swimming, it was relays. It was great.”
Ohio State will host the 2006 NCAA Diving Regional Championships for Zone C March 10-11 in the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio. Divers from Ohio State will be vying for a spot at the NCAA championships in Athens, Ga. Qualified OSU swimmers will join the divers at the national championships March 16-18 at the at the Gabrielsen Natatorium.
