Track and Field Teams Finish Regular Season with Scarlet and Gray Invitational – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the final meet of the 2006 indoor season Saturday at the Scarlet and Gray Invitational in French Field House. The Buckeyes fared well in both the track and field events in Saturday’s non-scoring meet.
In the sprints, Ohio State swept the Top 3 spots in several events, starting with the women’s 55-meter dash. Freshman Ayrizanna Favours won the event in a season-best time of 6.92. She finished ahead of teammates Jenna Harris (6.99) and Bever-Leigh Holloway (7.23). Later, Holloway followed with a win in the 55m hurdle event, timing 8.22. Favours also posted the best time in the 200m dash, winning in a career-best 24.2. Holloway placed second in 25.93 and Chandra Krempel finished third in 26.0.
Keturah Lofton, a senior thrower, closed out her indoor home career a mark of 67 feet, 3 ½ inches to win the women’s weight throw. Lofton’s measure counts as a provisional qualifier to the 2006 NCAA Indoor National Championships March 10-11 in Fayetteville, Ark. Also in the women’s throws, freshman Janine Zylinski won the women’s shot put with a heave of 49-4 1/4, finishing ahead of fellow OSU freshman Veronica Jatsek and her throw of 47-11. In the men’s throws, Lenny Jatsek helped Ohio State to another sweep by winning the weight on a heave of 66-9 3/4. David Ebersole (61-1 1/4 ) and Zach Carr (56-10 3/4 ) took second and third, respectively. In distance events, Nicole Gliem claimed the top time in the women’s mile, crossing the finish line in 5:10.25. The OSU men and women both captured the Top 2 spots in the 1,000-meter run. Laura Piper timed a season-best 2:55.29 for the win in the women’s race and Taylor Candella clocked 2:34.85 for first on the men’s side. Piper’s figure in the 1,000m ranks fourth all-time at Ohio State. In middle-distance races, Ohio State took top spots in both the men’s and women’s 600 meters. Joe Gourley (1:21.21) bested teammate Elon Simms (1:21.76) in the men’s event. Ashley Vannatta took the top spot in the women’s end at 1:37.55.
In the jumps, junior Veronica Vance captured first place in the women’s long jump at 18-3 and also posted a first-place mark of 39-7 1/4 in the triple jump. Sophomore Kim Willett cleared a personal-best 12-2 to win the women’s end of the pole vault. Kyle Burns set a season-high and took second in the men’s pole vault at 15-7 1/4.
In the men’s sprints, the Ohio State duo of Todd Dutch and Tony Cole claimed second and third in the 55m dash as Dutch set a season-best time of 6.35. Cole posted a 6.46. Cole also grabbed first in the 200m in 22.53. In the 400m, Pete Bohman and Kevin Neal tied for second with a time of 50.75.

The men’s and women’s teams compete at separate venues for the 2006 Big Ten Championships. The men travel to Iowa and the women go to Wisconsin. Both meets run next Saturday and Sunday.
