Ohio State Women’s Tennis Drops Match to Virginia Tech, 4-3 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team (5-2; 0-0 Big Ten) was downed by the Virginia Tech Hokies, 4-3, Saturday. The match was held at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg.
The Buckeyes won the first completed doubles match, but dropped the next two to give the doubles point to the Hokies. At No. 2, the tandem of Sonia Ruzimovsky (Jr., Brooklyn N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) and Angela DiPastina (Fr., Titusville, N.J.) dropped Abbey Walker and Inga Beerman, 9-8 (7), for the Buckeyes lone doubles victory. At the No. 1 spot in doubles, Caitlin O’Keefe (So., Troy, Mich./Troy) and Julie Blackmore (Fr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) were defeated by Anat Elazari and JJ Larson, 8-6. Kristin Messmer (Jr., Lutherville, Md./McDonogh) and Ciara Finucane (Jr., Dublin, Ireland/Georgia Southern) were downed by Ashley James and Jess Long in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (5).
The Buckeyes split the six singles matches with the Hokies. At the No. 1 spot, Ruzimovsky was defeated by No. 100-ranked Beerman, 6-3, 6-1. At No. 2, O’Keefe came back to defeat Elazari in a super tiebreaker, 6-7, 6-4, 1-0. At the No. 3 spot, Finucane outlasted Long to win in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. DiPastina was dropped by James, 6-0, 7-6, at No. 4. At No 5, Messmer took three sets to beat Larson, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. At No. 6, Voss was defeated by Walker, 6-2, 6-2.
The Buckeyes return home for a pair of matches against Louisville Feb. 25 and against Tennessee Feb. 26. Both matches will be held at 11 a.m. at the Jesse Owens West Recreation Center in Columbus.
