Extra-Inning Rally Falls Short for Ohio State in 2-1 Loss to Central Florida – Ohio State Buckeyes

DeLAND, Fla. – Playing into extra-innings for the fourth time in six games this season, the Ohio State softball team’s rally in the eighth inning came up just short as the Buckeyes dropped a 2-1 decision to Central Florida Saturday at the Stetson Softball Field in DeLand, Fla. Ohio State (4-2) freshman pitcher Kim Reeder did not allow an earned run in eight innings of work, while UCF (4-3) pitcher Allison Kime ended the Buckeyes’ school-record streak of scoring seven or more runs at five consecutive games.
Reeder (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.) struck out two batters, did not allow and walk and gave up just two unearned runs in the top of the eighth inning. Her record slips to 1-1 on the season.
Ohio State, which out-hit the Golden Knights, 6-4, scored once in the eighth inning on an RBI single by freshman Courtney Pruner (Akron, Ohio/Ellet), but it would be all Kime would allow as OSU falls to 2-2 in extra-inning contests this season.
Reeder was perfect through three innings before UCF loaded the based with one out in the fourth. A pop out and a ground out ended the threat, however, and Reeder would allow only three more base runners during the next three innings before the eighth.
OSU senior Chelsea Baker (Gahanna, Ohio/DeSales) tripled with two outs in the first inning and sophomore Liz Caputo (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) doubled with two outs in the third, but both were left on base.
Juniors Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson), Lauren Daykin (Melbourne, Australia/Manatee C.C., Fla.) and Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) all singled for the Buckeyes. UCF starting pitcher Allison Kime, who pitched a no-hitter against 2005 NCAA tournament participant Bethune-Cookman Wed., struck out seven. The UCF program is in just its fifth year of existence but was an NCAA tournament participant a year ago when the Golden Knights finished 47-29-1 and won the Atlantic Sun Conference.
Ohio State will face tournament host Stetson at 3 p.m. Saturday. The Buckeyes and Golden Knights will meet again at 11 a.m. Sunday.
