Ohio State Sets Eight NCAA “B” Cut Times on Third Day of Big Ten Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team broke its fourth school record in three days on the third day of the 2006 Big Ten Championships Friday. Ohio State, who is playing host to the championships in the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, recorded eight NCAA “B” qualifying times, with four of the marks set by Gulsah Gunenc (Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian).
The Buckeyes are in eighth place through 14 events with 189 points, trailing Northwestern by a point. Penn State leads the field of 11 teams with 372 points, while Michigan is second with 370 points.
The 400-yard medley relay team of Steph Fennell (Jr., Campbellville, Ontario/Milton District), Erin Church (So., Morrow, Ohio/Ursuline Academy), Griet Buelens (So., Kapelle, Belgium/Ursulinen Mechelen) and Elaine Chan (Fr., Hong Kong, China) opened the night with a season-best time of 3:48.97.
Gunenc competed in the finals of the 400-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly, recording an NCAA “B” consideration time in both events. In the individual medley, she finished 10th with a time of 4:20.72. The time also was the fastest for the Buckeyes in the event this season and a lifetime-best time for Gunenc. In the 100-yard butterfly, she finished seventh, clocking in at 55.21.
During preliminaries, Gunenc’s time in the 100-yard butterfly (54.92) broke the 18 year-old school record of 55.33. Her time also was a season and lifetime-best. She recorded an NCAA “B” qualifying time in both the individual medley and butterfly events during preliminary competition, bringing her total to four for the day.
Nicole Maglich (Sr., Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota) and Buelens each finished in the Top 8 of the 200-yard freestyle. Maglich hit the wall in a season-best time of 1:48.19 to finish fourth. Buelens clocked in at 1:49.06 to finish in eighth. Both times were NCAA “B” consideration times, as were both swimmers’ preliminary times.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Church recorded a season and lifetime-best time of 1:04.39 for the Buckeyes during qualifying to move onto the finals. She went on to finish 12th (1:05.23) in the evening session. Fennell returned in the finals for the 100-yard backstroke. She finished 14th in the event with a time of 57.29.
In the diving well, Julie Broms, (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) finished third of 37 divers on the 3-meter springboard. Broms scored 346.35 points during the finals. Anesa Beard (Jr., Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) was in the Top 10 as well, finishing 10th with 282.40 points.
Both the 200- and 800-yard freestyle relay teams have recorded NCAA “B” qualifying times and a total 14 individual NCAA “B” times have been recorded among four Buckeyes thus far in the championships. Maglich, Buelens and Gunenc each have recorded four NCAA “B” times. Chan claimed two NCAA “B” cut times Thursday. NCAA “B” times put the individual or relay team into consideration to compete at the 2006 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Athens, Ga. Ohio State also has recorded 31 lifetime-best times during the 14 events.
The 2006 Big Ten Championships conclude Saturday with preliminary action beginning at 11 a.m. Finals for the events begin at 7 p.m. Live scores, times and rankings are available online at ohiostatebuckeyes.com.
