COLUMBUS, Ohio– The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team recorded two school records and four NCAA “B” qualifying times on day two of the 2006 Big Ten Championships Thursday. Ohio State, who is playing host to the championships in the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, has broken four school records after only seven events. Three of those records stood for at least 13 years.
The Buckeyes are in eighth place with 101 points. Minnesota leads the field of 11 teams with 200 points, while Michigan is second with 193 points.
The Big Ten championships resume Friday with preliminary action beginning at 11 a.m. Finals for the events will begin at 7 p.m. Live scores, times and rankings are available online at ohiostatebuckeyes.com.
Opening the meet with a seventh-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, the team of Elaine Chan (Fr., Hong Kong, China), Griet Buelens (So., Kapelle, Belgium/Ursulinen Mechelen) Nicole Maglich (Sr., Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota) and Annie Rennebohm (So., Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) recorded an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:33.15. The time also marked one of four school records broken after two days of competition. The previous school record of 1:33.98 was set in 1991.
In the 500-yard freestyle, Maglich finished in fifth place with a time of 4:47.58, while Buelens finished in 10th place (4:49.53). Maglich and Buelens’ final times were NCAA “B” consideration times and Buelens’ was a lifetime-best time. Both swimmers’ preliminary times also were NCAA “B” cut times.
Chan hit the wall in a school-record time of 23.20 during preliminary racing to qualify for the finals. Chan’s preliminary race broke the time of 23.34 recorded by Holly Humphrey in 1992. Chan’s qualifying time was an NCAA “B” consideration time and a lifetime-best time. During the finals, Chan finished 14th (23.35).
In the diving well, Julie Broms, (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) was the top Buckeye qualifier on the 1-meter springboard event. After six dives, Brom totaled 251.80 points to finish at 14th. Anesa Beard (Jr., Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) was 13 points behind Broms, scoring 238.80 to finish 17th.
Both the 200- and 800-yard freestyle relay teams recorded NCAA “B” qualifying times and six individual NCAA “B” times have been recorded among three Buckeyes. Maglich, Buelens and Chan each have recorded two NCAA “B” times. NCAA “B” times put the individual or relay team into consideration to compete at the 2006 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Athens, Ga. Ohio State also has recorded 17 lifetime-best times during the seven events.
“We had an awesome morning,” Jeanne Fleck, Ohio State head coach, said. “We did pretty well tonight. Our relay was really good. We’ve broken four school records within seven events and we’re getting better each day. I’m really happy.”
