Columbus, Ohio — The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams return home on Feb. 18 for the their second home meet of the season the Scarlet and Gray Invitational.

Women’s Relay Sets School Record in Consecutive Meets
At the 2006 Iowa State Classic, the women’s 4×400-meter relay team topped the Ohio State record for the second consecutive week. After posting a time of 3:41 last week at the New Balance Invite in New York City, the Buckeyes raced to a third-place time of 3:39.95, which provisionally qualified the team for the national meet.
In both record-setting performances, Ohio State freshman Chandra Krempel handled the lead leg and passed the baton off to Jenna Harris and Jessica Jones for the middle legs. Freshman Ayrizanna Favours anchored the team to the record-setting times that bested the 3:42.09 mark set Feb. 21, 1999 on a relay squad led by All-American Dominique Calloway (1998-99). At the Husky Invitational, senior Brian Olinger made Ohio State history in the 5,000-meter run with his time of 13:45.94. Olinger’s time shattered his Ohio State record in the 5,000m of 13:52.18 set March 4, 2005. Olinger’s time also served as an automatic bid to the 2006 NCAA indoor Championships next month. Olinger was an All-American in the 5K in 2005.
Olinger ran his first 3,000-meter run of the season in the New Balance Collegiate Invitational (Feb.5). Even with a mild case of the flu, Olinger still rewrote the Ohio State record books with his time of 8:02.21, a mark that ranked fourth in Buckeye history. Olinger now holds the second and fourth best times in Ohio State indoor history in the 3,000m.
Olinger still is after the record for the best 3,000m which is currently held by Ohio State distance coach Robert Gary.
“See”ing is Believing
Freshman Jeff See ran his first mile of the season at the 2006 New Balance Collegiate Invitational. See did not disappoint, he came in fourth with a time of 4:03.75. This mark was good enough to provisionally qualify him for the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships.
See, the 2005 high school national champion in the mile, then topped this mark the following week at the Husky Invitational. See ran the third-best mile time in Ohio State history. See’s time of 4:03.62 ranks third in Ohio State indoor history and the fastest time ever by a freshman. See’s time also provisionally qualified for the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Recapping the 2006 Iowa State Classic and the Husky Invitational
The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams competed Saturday at two meets, the Husky Invitational at the University of Washington in Seattle, Wash., and the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa.
At the Husky Invitational, senior Brian Olinger made Ohio State history in the 5,000 with his time of 13:45.94. Olinger’s time shattered his Ohio State record in the 5,000 of 13:52.18 set March 4, 2005. Olinger’s time also served as an automatic bid to the 2006 NCAA indoor Championships next month. Olinger was an All-American in the 5K in 2005.
Also at Washington, freshman Jeff See, the 2005 high school national champion in the mile, also posted the third-best mile time in Ohio State history for the second consecutive week. For the women at the Husky Invitational, Nicole Gliem took 17th in the 5,000m with a time of 17:14.12.

Freshman Ayrizanna Favours, who anchored the 4x400m team, continues to impress individually as she tied for sixth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.57. Ashley McLean took ninth in the 600-yard run with a time of 1:26.53.
In the field events, Janine Zylinski claimed sixth in the shot put with a toss of 53 feet, 7 3/4 inches. Her throw also provisionally qualifies for the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships.
For the men, Elon Simms posted a second-place finish in the 600-yard run with a time of 1:11.09. Senior Todd Dutch tied for sixth in the 60m dash with a time of 6.83. Dutch also had a strong showing in the 200m Friday, finishing 10th with a time of 21.53.
A day after taking fourth-place in the weight, Lenny Jatsek led the Buckeyes in the field with a personal-best of 57-10 1/4 to finish ninth in the shot put Saturday.
Revisiting the 2005 Scarlet and Gray Invitational
The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams played host the final regular season meet in the Scarlet and Gray Invitational Saturday in French Field House. Ohio State senior Shelaine Larson became the first Buckeye to record an automatic qualifier to the 2005 NCAA Championships with a career-best performance in the women’s weight throw. Fellow senior Bryan Duby also reached a personal best in the weight to provisionally qualify. A pair of returning All-American jumpers also finished their indoor careers Saturday as Rosalind Goodwin and Shayla Moore placed 1-2 in the triple jump.
In the women’s weight, Ohio State claimed the Top 3 spots with Larson tossing a mark of 66 feet, 3 inches (66-3) for first place. Her measure in the weight earned an automatic bid to the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships. Also in the weight, Katy Houser provisionally qualified with a mark of 62-0 1/2 for second, while Tiffany Davis finished third at 59-8 1/2. Later, Larson added a third-place effort in the shot put at a length of 45-1 1/2.
On the men’s side, Duby provisionally qualified in the weight with a career-best throw of 68-2 1/2. Duby’s mark in the event ranks fourth all-time in Ohio State history. Freshman Lenny Jatsek also topped the 60-foot mark in fourth place at 60-4. In the shot put, freshman Patrick Whalen took second in the men’s shot put with a heave of 53-6 1/2.
Goodwin and Moore notched the Top 2 spots in the women’s triple jump. Goodwin bettered Moore’s previous team-best mark of 43-1 with a leap of 43-1 1/2 to claim first place. Moore followed Goodwin with a second-place measure at 42-5 1/4. Both of Goodwin and Moore’s jumps qualify provisionally for the NCAA meet.
Ohio State also claimed the Top 3 spots in the men’s high jump with freshman Marios Iacovou leading the way at a winning height of 6-10 1/4. Iavocou was followed by Ohio State junior Scott Hudepohl at 6-8 1/4 and fellow freshman Pat Woods at 6-6 1/4. For the women, sophomore Jessie Stringer took second in the high jump at 5-3. In the pole vault, Freshman Kim Willet notched a career-best height with a performance of 11-5 3/4 to claim fourth.
In the sprint events, Jenna Harris claimed the women’s 55-meter dash in a time of 7.03, while the men scored two Top 4 finishes with freshman Tony Cole leading the way in a runner-up time of 6.28. Fellow sprinter Todd Dutch clocked a 6.48 for fourth place. The women went 1-2 in the 600m as Jennifer Ogbuehi turned in a first-place time of 1:36.52 ahead of teammate Pannsy Henry, who ran 1:37.30.
The distance events saw Jacob McCauley top the field in the mile run in a time 4:35.10 and sophomore Joe Gourley place first in the 600m at 1:21.24. Freshman Charlie Straka timed a team and season-best in the 1,000-meter run in a winning time of 2:33.83. For the women, Laura Piper pocketed to the women’s 800m in 2:15.93, while Melonie Grim clocked a winning time in the mile at 5:16.38.
In the relays, the Ohio State women’s `B’ team finished ahead of OSU’s `A’ team in the 4x400m. The `B’ squad timed a 3:58.38, while the `A’ took second at 4:00.80. For the men, team `A’ rallied at the final turn to take first place ahead of OSU `B’ in 3:17.20. Team `B’ finished in 3:17.66.
Buckeyes in the Big Ten Ranks
Several Buckeyes own Top 5 marks in the Big Ten this season. For the men on the track, senior Todd Dutch has the third-best time in the Big Ten this season in the 200-meter dash (21.28). Joe Gourley holds the third best time in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.68. Jeff See, with his performance at the Husky Invitational, now is now third in the Big Ten in the mile with a time of 4:03.62. His time is the third-best in Ohio State history and best time for a freshman in the Big Ten this season. See’s time also provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Brian Olinger is third in the Big Ten in the 3,000m with a time of 8:02.21. His time also has provisionally qualified Olinger for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Olinger also has the third-best time in the 5,000m this season with a time of 13:45.94. This time also was good enough to automatically qualify him for the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championship. The men’s 4×400 team has the third best mark this season in the Big Ten with a time of 3:10.66
In the field, Brandon Carhcart has the sixth-best triple jump in Big Ten this season, and the best jump by freshman with a mark of 49-8 1/4. Sophomore, Lenny Jatsek has the second-longest weight throw in the Big Ten this season. Jatsek’s toss of 67-5 1/4 provisionally qualified him for the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships.
On the women’s end, Jenna Harris (7.42) and Ayrizanna Favours (7.45) have the second and third 60m times in the Big Ten, respectively. Harris’ time also has earned her a provisional qualification for the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships. Harris also is fifth in the 200m with a time of 23.99 with her time at Iowa. This mark also provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA Indoor championships. Favours has the fastest time for a freshman this season in the 200m with a mark of 24.22. Favours also is fifth in the Big Ten this season in the 400m with a time of 54.67. Junior Melanie Price is fifth in the 1,000m run with a time of 2:58.81. The women’s 4x400m relay is second in the Big Ten with a time of 3:39.25.
In the field for the women, Jessica Stringer is third in the Big Ten this season in the high jump. Her leap of 5-10 3/4 at Indiana Jan. 21 provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Janine Zylinski has the best shot put toss this season with a mark of 53-7 1/2. This also provisionally qualifies Zylinski for the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships. Veronica Jatsek now is fourth in the Big Ten in the shot put with her throw of 49-4 3/4. Jatsek also is fifth in the Big Ten in the weight throw with her toss of 58-8 1/4 at the Iowa State Classic. In the weight throw, Keturah Lofton has the second-best throw in the Big Ten. Lofton’s throw of 67-2 1/2 in the opening meet at Kentucky Jan. 14 also provisionally qualified her for the NCAA championships.
Freshman Favours off in a Flash
Freshman Ayrizanna Favours has started her Ohio State career in style. Favours started the season with a third-place finish in the 400m at the Kentucky Invitational. In her next meet Favours, in Indiana, took second in the 400m in a time of 54.96. In her first home meet, Favours gave the home crowd a lot to cheer about as she won the 55m(6.93) and 200m (24.54).
Jatsek Scores Big Ten Male Athlete of the Week of Jan. 25
Sophomore thrower Lenny Jatsek was named Athlete of the Week in an announcement made by the Big Ten Jan. 25. At the Indiana Invitational, Jatsek won the men’s weight throw event and placed fourth in the shot put.
With his winning weight mark of 65 feet, 9 ½ inches, Jatsek provisionally qualified for the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships and posted the league’s second-best mark in the event this season. Jatsek’s weight figure also moved him into the Top 5 in Ohio State’s all-time indoor performance list in the weight. Later, Jatsek added a fourth-place score in the shot put with a toss of 51-11.
Jatsek’s weekly honor contributes to Ohio State’s impressive run of Big Ten weekly honorees in the throws events. During the last three indoor seasons and last two outdoor campaigns, Buckeye men’s and women’s throwers have combined to win 14 conference athlete of the week awards.
Harris Does it Again
Junior Jenna Harris looked to follow up a strong 2005 showing in New York when she captured second place in the collegiate 60-meter dash at the Millrose Games in Madison Square Garden. She started Friday by winning Heat 4 of the 60m in a season-best time of 7.42, which qualified for her second straight appearance in the Millrose 60m. Later in MSG, Harris placed sixth in the collegiate section in 7.54.
Stringer, Jatsek Post All-Time Marks at Indiana
At the Indiana Invite Jan. 21, two Buckeyes posted all-time Ohio State marks. Junior Jessica Stringer won the women’s high jump by clearing 5 feet, 7 3/4 inches to rank third all-time at OSU. Sophomore Lenny Jatsek heaved a mark of 65-9 1/2 to win the weight throw and now rates fifth all-time at OSU in the event.
Lofton Makes Triumphant Return
After missing all of last season, senior thrower Keturah Lofton has made a triumphant return to competition. The former Big Ten champion and two-time All-American won the weight throw at Kentucky and was runner-up at Indiana.
At the Kentucky Invite, Lofton tossed a provisional qualifier for the NCAA indoor championships, reaching a distance of 67-2 1/4. Her toss at Kentucky is also the second best toss in the Big Ten so far this season.
At Akron last week, Lofton took the top spot in the weight throw for her third weight win this season.
Notable Debuts At Kentucky
The men’s and women’s team 37 has freshman combined and several transfer student-athletes that will be making their Ohio State debut this season. Several did so last weekend at the Kentucky Invitational.
For the men, Jeff See, last year’s high school national champion in the mile, made his track and field debut for the Buckeyes, taking fourth in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 8:15.14. In the field, Bryan Chard took 10th-place in the pole vault with a height of 14-07 1/4. Brandon Cathcart, last year’s high school national champion in the triple jump, took fourth place in the triple with a distance of 49-8 1/4. Adam Wilhelm and Elon Simms both made their Ohio State debuts in the 400 meters with times of 49.49 and 49.61, respectively.
For the women, Ayrizonna Favours took third in the 400 meters with a time of 55.96. Transfer Veronica Vance made her first Ohio State appearance in two events the in long jump and the triple jump with leaps of 17-11 1/2 and 38-9 3/4, respectively.
Coach Gary and Olinger Honored For Outstanding Efforts In 2005 Cross Country Season
The NCAA announced its men’s cross country regional awards Saturday Nov. 19 prior to the 2005 National Championship meet Monday in Terre Haute, Ind. Ohio State head coach Robert Gary was named 2005 Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year, while senior co-captain Brian Olinger earned 2005 Great Lakes Runner of the Year honors.
Gary guided the Buckeyes to a second-place finish at the 2005 Big Ten Championships, a third-place team score at the 2005 NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships and an 11th place finish at the NCAA Championships. Olinger led the Ohio State pack in each of the races, taking 10th at Big Ten’s before winning the regional event Nov. 12.
For the season, Gary and Olinger also combined to lead Ohio State to three event team titles and an all-time best sixth-place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis in September.
