COLUMBUS, Ohio– The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team opened the 2006 Big Ten Championships Wednesday with two school records in the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay events. Ohio State, who is playing host to the championships in the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, also recorded an NCAA `B’ qualifying time in the freestyle relay.
After two events, the Buckeyes are in sixth place with 50 points. Wisconsin leads the field of 11 teams with 72 points, while Minnesota is second with 70 points.
The Big Ten championships resume Thursday with preliminary action beginning at 9:30 a.m. Finals for the events will begin at 7 p.m. Live scores, times and rankings are available online at ohiostatebuckeyes.com.
In the opening event, the Buckeyes set an Ohio State school record in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Elaine Chan (Fr., Hong Kong, China), Rebekah Rychvalsky (Jr., Sydney, Australia/Castle Hill), Linda Lund-Kristianson (So., Roennede, Denmark/Haslev) and Nicole Maglich (Sr., Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota) pooled their talents to record a time of 1:43.90. The time knocked five-tenths off the previous school record of 1:44.40 set in 1998.
OSU set its second school record in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Maglich, Gulsah Gunenc (Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian), Annie Rennebohm (So., Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), and Griet Buelens (So., Kapelle, Belgium/Ursulinen Mechelen) touched the wall in an NCAA “B” qualifying time of 7:19.76. The time broke the 13-year school record of 7:20.31. With the NCAA “B” time, the relay team is in consideration to compete at the 2006 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Athens, Ga. “We are very excited about breaking two records,” Jeanne Fleck, Ohio State head coach, said. “Our goal was to break some school records. We wanted to break three, but we only got two. This is the highest we have finished in a relay in a long time. We are excited and happy. This is a great way to start the meet.”
