Columbus, Ohio — The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams will compete in events in New York City, N.Y. and Akron, Ohio this weekend. The teams willl split up sending some members to the 2006 Akron Open, others to the 2006 New Balance Collegiate Invitational and qualifers at the New Balance Collegiate Invite will compete in the 2006 Millrose Games friday evening.

The men’s and women’s teams will both send several individuals to compete in New York City this weekend. Student-athletes that qualify in the New Balance Collegiate Invitational Friday will go on to compete in the Millrose Games later that night in Madison Square Garden. Junior Jenna Harris came in second last season in the Millrose 60m. The women are also sending freshman Ayrizonna Favours, who will compete in the 400m dash.
The men’s team will send two high school national champions from last season, Jeff See in the mile, and Brandon Cathcart in the triple jump. Senior Brian Olinger will run his first 3,000m this season at the armory. Both the men and the women will also send 4×400 teams.

Recapping the 2006 Ohio State Invitational
Ohio State competed in its first home meet of the 2006 season at the Ohio State Invitational Saturday in French Field House. Both the men and women swept the Top 3 spots in several track events, while the throwers staked claim to three of their four combined events.
Sophomore Lenny Jatsek, the current men’s Big Ten athlete of the week, started his day with a win in the men’s shot put. Jatsek claimed first place in the event with a personal-best heave of 56 feet, 11 ¼ inches. Later, Jatsek was the top collegiate competitor in the weight, taking second with a career-best measure of 67-5 ½. In the women’s throws, senior Keturah Lofton captured the weight with a provisional qualifier of 66-10 3/4 prior freshman Janine Zylinski’s victory in the shot put at a distance of 49-6 1/4.
The Buckeye women scored a sweep in the 55-meter dash as freshman Ayrizanna Favours won the event in 6.93. She was followed by junior Jenna Harris’ time of 6.98 and fellow freshman Bever-Liegh Holloway, who timed 7.07. Moments after taking third in the 55m, Holloway ran away with the 55-meter hurdles in 8.19. The same trio of sprinters added a second sweep in the 200m. Again, Favours placed first in a career-best 24.54 and was followed by Harris (24.66) and Holloway (26.07).
On the track for the men, Ohio State carried the first three spots in the 400-meter run. Senior Todd Dutch placed first in 49.52. He finished ahead of teammates Gerald Griffin (49.84) and Adam Wilhelm (50.11). A senior for the men’s team also posted a winning time in the 600m, when Joe Gourley crossed the finish line in 1:21.98.
In distance events, Ohio State’s Glenn Collins took top honors in the mile in an indoor personal record of 4:17.99. For the women, Melanie Price won the 1,000m in 2:58.81.
In the jumps, junior Veronica Vance won the women’s triple jump at 39-8 1/2. A pair of Buckeyes posted career bests in the pole vault. Kim Willett cleared 11-6 ½ to claim runner up in the women’s event and freshman Bryan Chard also took second on the men’s side at 15-1.
Ohio State finished off the day with wins in both the men’s and women’s 4×400-meter relay events. Favours ran the anchor leg for the women and toted the baton across the finish line in 3:51.74. Tony Cole ran the final leg for the men’s winning time of 3:19.84.
Ohio State splits the squad next week as some competitors will head to New York City for the Armory Invitational Friday and Saturday. Others will head north and compete at Akron Saturday.
Revisiting the 2005 New Balance Armory Collegiate Invitational and Millrose Games
Members of the Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field team, who traveled to New York City to compete in the fifth annual New Balance Armory Collegiate Invitational, concluded competition at the New Balance Track and Field Center.
Highlighting the field for the Buckeyes in New York were senior women’s jumpers Rosalind Goodwin and Shayla Moore, both of whom competed in the collegiate triple jump competition. Moore led the way in the event with a second-place finish, posting a performance of 43 feet, 1 inch (43-1), while Goodwin finished in third. Moore’s jump served as a provisional qualifier.
For the men’s jump squad, freshman Marios Iacovou finished second with a personal best leap of 7-1 3/4 in the collegiate high jump.
In the sprint events, Todd Dutch finished fourth in the 200-meter dash, clocking a time of 21.51, while teammate Tony Cole posted as personal-best time of 22.03. On the women’s side, sophomore Jenna Harris notched a personal and team-best time of 24.03 in the 200-meter dash. the previous night, Harris timed a personal-best 7.45 to place second in the collegiate 60-meter dash at the Millrose Games.
Buckeyes in the Big Ten Ranks
Several Buckeyes own Top 5 marks in the Big Ten this season. For the men on the track, senior Todd Dutch is in the Top 5 in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.83. In the 1,000-meter run, Taylor Candella is third at 2:31.18. Brian Olinger has the fourth-best time in the mile with a mark of 4:07.83.
In the field, Brandon Carhcart has the fifth-best triple jump in Big Ten this season, and the best jump by freshman with a mark of 49-8 1/4. Sophomore, Lenny Jatsek has the second-longest weight throw in the Big Ten this season. Jatsek’s toss of 67-5 1/4 provisionally quailfied him for the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships.
On the women’s end, Ayrizanna Favours(7.45) and Jenna Harris(7.50) have the second and third 60m times in the Big Ten, respectively. Harris also is fourth in the 200m with a time of 24.20. Favours has the fastest time for a freshman this season in the 200m with a mark of 24.34. Favours also is third in the Big Ten this season in the 400m with a time of 54.96. Junior Melanie Price is third in the 1,000m run with a time of 2:58.81.
In the field for the women, Jessica Stringer is third in the Big Ten this season in the high jump. Her leap of 5-10 3/4 at Indiana provisionally quailfied her for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Janine Zylinski has the third-best shot put toss this season with a mark of 49-11 3/4. In the weight throw Keturah Lofton has the second best throw in the Big Ten. Lofton’s throw of 67-2 1/2 in the opening meet at Kentucky also provisionally quaified her for the NCAA championships.
Jatsek Scores Big Ten Male Athlete of The Week of Jan. 25
Sophomore thrower Lenny Jatsek was named Athlete of the Week in an announcement made by the Big Ten Jan. 25. Saturday at the Indiana Invitational, Jatsek won the men’s weight throw event and placed fourth in the shot put.
With his winning weight mark of 65 feet, 9 ½ inches Saturday, Jatsek provisionally qualified for the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships and posted the league’s second-best mark in the event this season. Jatsek’s weight figure also moved him into the Top 5 in Ohio State’s all-time indoor performance list in the weight. Later Saturday, Jatsek added a fourth-place score in the shot put with a toss of 51-11.
Jatsek’s weekly honor contributes to Ohio State’s impressive run of Big Ten weekly honorees in the throws events. During the last three indoor seasons and last two outdoor campaigns, Buckeye men’s and women’s throwers have combined to win 14 conference athlete of the week awards.
Stringer, Jatsek Post All-Time Marks at Indiana
At the Indiana Invite Jan. 21, two Buckeyes posted all-time Ohio State marks. Junior Jessica Stringer won the women’s high jump by clearing 5 feet, 7 3/4 inches to rank third all-time at OSU. Sophomore Lenny Jatsek heaved a mark of 65-9 1/2 to win the weight throw and now rates fifth all-time at OSU in the event.
Lofton Makes Triumphant Return
After missing all of last season, senior thrower Keturah Lofton has made a triumphant return to competition. The former Big Ten champion and two-time All-American won the weight throw at Kentucky and was runner-up at Indiana.
At the Kentucky Invite, Lofton tossed a provisional qualifier for the NCAA indoor championships, reaching a distance of 67-2 1/4. Her toss at Kentucky is also the second best toss in the Big Ten so far this season.
Notable Debuts At Kentucky
The men’s and women’s team 37 has freshman combined and several transfer student-athletes that will be making their Ohio State debut this season. Several did so last weekend at the Kentucky Invitational.
For the men, Jeff See, last year’s high school national champion in the mile, made his track and field debut for the Buckeyes, taking fourth in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 8:15.14. In the field, Bryan Chard took 10th-place in the pole vault with a height of 14-07 1/4. Brandon Cathcart, last year’s high school national champion in the triple jump, took fourth place in the triple with a distance of 49-8 1/4. Adam Wilhelm and Elon Simms both made their Ohio State debuts in the 400 meters with times of 49.49 and 49.61, respectively.
For the women, Ayrizonna Favours took third in the 400 meters with a time of 55.96. Transfer Veronica Vance made her first Ohio State apperence in two events the in long jump and the triple jump with leaps of 17-11 1/2 and 38-9 3/4, respectively.
Coach Gary and Olinger Honored for Outstanding Efforts In 2005 Cross Country Season
The NCAA announced its men’s cross country regional awards Saturday Nov. 19 prior to the 2005 National Championship meet Monday in Terre Haute, Ind. Ohio State head coach Robert Gary was named 2005 Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year, while senior co-captain Brian Olinger earned 2005 Great Lakes Runner of the Year honors.
Gary guided the Buckeyes to a second-place finish at the 2005 Big Ten Championships, a third-place team score at the 2005 NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships and an 11th place finish at the NCAA Championships. Olinger led the Ohio State pack in each of the races, taking 10th at Big Ten’s before winning the regional event Nov. 12.
For the season, Gary and Olinger also combined to lead Ohio State to three event team titles and an all-time best sixth-place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis in September.
