11th Seeded Women’s Volleyball Falls 0-3 to Sixth-seeded Washington at the Seattle Regional Semifinal – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 11th seeded Ohio State (25-8) women’s volleyball team fell 0-3 (16-30, 18-30, 18-30) to sixth-seeded Washington (28-4) in the second semifinal match of the Seattle Regional in front of 6,846 fans. The Huskies will face third-seeded Penn State (32-2), a 3-0 (30-24, 30-18, 30-15) winner over 14th-seeded Purdue (23-11) in the first semifinal. Washington and Penn State will play Saturday at 9 p.m. ET in the Bank of America Arena for a berth in the NCAA Championship semifinals, Dec. 14.
Ohio State’s Danielle Meyer (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a match-high 15 points for the Buckeyes with Anna Szerszen (Fr., Conflans Ste Hne, France) adding 12. Meyer had 12 kills, a solo block and four assists while Szerszen collected 12 kills. Washington’s Stevie Mussie had a team-high 14.5 points for the Huskies with Jessica Swarbrick adding 14. Mussie posted 11 kills, an ace serve, a solo block and three assist blocks while Swarbrick had 10 kills and a match-high eight assist blocks.
Washington broke a 1-1 tie in game one, with two kills by Morrison and an Ohio State error to take a 4-1 lead. The Huskies continued to build on the lead at 8-4 before taking a 12-4 lead with a four-point run including two kills from Alesha Deesing, a Morrison solo block and an OSU error. Washington held a 29-16 lead and closed out the game with a Deesing kill for a 30-16 win. Washington hit .459 for the game to .025 for the Buckeyes.
Trailing 2-0 in game two, Ohio State kills by Szerszen and Ami Stevens (Jr., Centerburg, Ohio) tied the game at two. A Huskie solo block by Janine Sandell, a Mussie kill and a Buckeye error made it 5-2, Washington. OSU responded with a Meyer-Danielle McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) block, a McCarthy solo block and a Meyer-Stevens block to tie the game at five. An OSU error and a Meyer kill moved the score to 6-6. A Washington error and a Morrison kill took the score to 7-7. Kills by Szerszen and Marisa Main (Sr., Louisville, Ky.) gave Ohio State a 9-7 lead. A Buckeye error and a Szerszen kill made it 10-8. A Washington kill by Jessica Swarbrick and a Swarbrick-Mussie block tied the game at ten. A Sandell-Swarbrick block and a Morrison ace serve gave Washington a 12-10 lead. The Buckeyes tied the game at 12 with a Szerszen kill and a Washington error. The Huskies with a Sandell kill and a Buckeye error took a 14-12 lead. A Huskie error and a Meyer kill tied the game at 14. Washington took the lead for good with a Sandell kill at 15-14. The Huskies expanded the lead to 17-14 with a Mussie kill and an Ashley Aratani ace serve. Washington then outscored Ohio State, 10-4 to hold a 27-18 lead. A Swarbrick kill and a Mussie-Swarbrick block made it 29-18 and game point for the Huskies. A Mussie kill ended the game for Washington at 30-18 for a 2-0 lead in the match. The Huskies hit .220 for the game to .027 for Ohio State.
Tied at four in game three, Washington outscored Ohio State, 8-2, to take a 12-6 lead. The Buckeyes cut the lead to three at 12-9 with a Meyer kill, a Meyer-Stevens block and a McCarthy ace serve. Kills by Morrison and Meyer moved the score to 13-10. A Buckeye error and a Washington block by Mussie and Swarbrick gave the Huskies a five-point lead at 15-10. Buckeye kills from Meyer and Szerszen and a Huskie kill by Swarbrick cut the lead to four a 16-12. At 18-14, two OSU errors and a Morrison solo block took the lead to seven at 21-14. A kill from Stevens made it 21-15. Two Buckeye errors and a Swarbrick kill expanded the lead to 24-15. A Meyer kill stopped the run at 24-16. A 5-0 Huskie scoring run set match point at 29-16. A Meyer kill stopped the first match point (29-17) but a Mussie kill ended the game at 30-17 for a 3-0 Washington victory in the match. The Huskies hit .333 for the game to .077 for Ohio State.
Washington, for the match, hit .333 to Ohio State’s .043. The Huskies had a 47 to 34 advantage in kills and a six-to-three edge in ace serves. Each squad gave up four service errors. Defensively, Washington had a 47-41 margin in digs with Tamari Miyashiro recording a match-high 16 for Washington, while Ashley Kiel (Sr., Allenton, Wis.) had a team-high 12 for Ohio State. At the net, the Huskies had 16-6 advantage in team blocks. Huskie Swarbrick recorded a match-high eight assist blocks. With OSU’s Meyer have five total blocks with a solo and four assists. Washington setter Courtney Thompson had a match-high 39 assists in the match while OSU’s Main had 28.
