COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team returned to action in the annual Scarlet and Gray meet Friday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The women set meet records in four individual events.
The Scarlet team took an early lead in the 200-yard medley relay. Senior captain Stephanie Fennell (Fr., Campbellville, Canada/Milton District) lead off followed by Megan Alexander (Fr., Worthington, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne), Jill Lockhart (Fr., Munice, Ind./Yorktown) and Elaine Chan (So., Hong Kong China/ Hupp Yenn) to touch the wall first in 1 minute, 50.56 seconds.
Griet Buelens (Jr., Kapelle-Op-Den-Bos, Belgium/Ursuline Academy) of the Scarlet team followed suit with a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle. She set a meet record (10:14.16) despite swimming 200 yards of the event without her cap and goggles. On the Gray side, Haley Mitchell (Fr., Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Western) was the runner-up with a personal best time of 10:14.72.
Also recording wins for the Scarlet team were Chan and Sam Johnson (Jr., Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken). Johnson set the third meet record of the night with a winning time of 2:11.43 in the 200-yard individual medley. Chan picked up on the trend, setting another meet record in the 50-yard freestyle (23.83). Chan claimed a second win in the 100-yard freestyle with 53.43, a time that also was a meet record. Lockhart picked up her first win of the season, touching in at 2:08.82 in the 200-yard backstroke.
Farriss Blaskovits (Fr., Nepean, Ontario/Mother Theresa) recorded the Gray team’s first win of the night in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.43). Buelens recorded her second individual win in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:01.79, a time which almost qualifies as an NCAA-B cut. Mitchell captured her first collegiate win in the 500-yard freestyle (5:04.95). Classmate Colleen Schweitzer (Fr., Highlands Park, Colo./Highlands Ranch) stopped the clock at 2:23.02 for the win in the 200-yard breaststroke. The Gray squad came back to win the meet in the last event with first- and third-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Finishing the race first was quad of Annie Rennenbom (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), Stasia von Rahl (So., Mishawka, Ind./St. Joseph’s), Gulsah Gunenc and Linda Lund (Jr., Roennede, Denmark/Haslev) which finished 1:39.94.
“We had some really good swims tonight,” Jeanne Fleck, head swimming coach, said. “We were just really solid in our events. For us to have two swimmers go 2:01 in the 200 fly this early in the season is great. It also was fun to see some of the freshmen step it up.”
The Buckeyes will return to action with a meet against conference rival Illinois, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m., at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
