Women’s Tennis Completes Day Three at ITA Midwest Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis ended tournament play at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships Saturday in East Lansing, Mich. The Buckeyes had six singles players eliminated from the main draw, including three in the Round of 32, while two Buckeye doubles teams lost in the Round of 16.
The doubles tandem of Kristin Messmer (Sr., Md./McDonogh) and Ciara Finucane (Dublin, Ireland/Georgia Southern) lost in the Round of 16 to the second-seed in the draw, Rose and Prousis of Northwestern, in a close match, 8-6. The duo of Julie Blackmore (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and Sonia Ruzimovsky (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Technical) was eliminated by Western Michigan’s Jeanmarie and Pahl, 8-4.
Three Buckeyes won their first-round matches in the 64-player singles draw. Freshman Ally Mueller (Roswell, Ga./New Braunfels (Texas) defeated Iowa’s Hillary Mintz, a 9-12 seed, 6-2, 7-5, before she was knocked out by Minnesota’s Ida Malmberg in straight sets. Classmate Christina Keesey (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) downed No. 13-16 seed Laura McGaffigan of Indiana, 7-6 (4), 6-3, in the opening round and later was defeated by Vanessa Frankowski of Eastern Michigan University.
Blackmore beat Indiana’s Brianna Williams in a third-set tiebreaker (1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (2) before falling to Purdue’s Randi Schuler, a 5-8 seed, in straight sets in the Round of 32.
The Buckeyes return to action at the Big Green Invitational hosted by Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H., Oct. 28-30.
