COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team completed its second day of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in East Lansing, Mich., Friday. Two doubles teams advanced to the Round of 16 and Angela DiPastina notched her third win in the singles qualifying round to earn a spot in the 64-player main draw.
DiPastina (So., Titusville, N.J./Hun School of Princeton), won her final match in the qualifying Round of 16, defeating Erin Clark of Indiana, (6-4, 5-7, 6-2), to earn one of eight open spots in the main draw. She will be joining teammates Julie Blackmore (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons), Caitlin O’Keefe (Troy, Mich./Troy), Sonia Ruzimovsky (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Technical), Christina Keesey (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) and Ally Mueller (Roswell, Ga./New Braunfels (Texas), who already have received a spot in the 64-player main draw which begins Saturday.
Friday play also featured a 64-team doubles competition, where four pairs of Buckeyes competed. The tandems of Blackmore and Ruzimovsky and Kristin Messmer and Ciara Finucane (Dublin, Ireland/Georgia Southern) each notched two wins Friday to advance to the Round of 16. Blackmore and Ruzimovsky beat Cincinatti’s Dandik and Hinton, 8-3, in the opening round and Harding/Jurgelia of Wisconsin-Greeny Bay, 8-2, in the Round of 32. Messmer and Finucane downed Chicago State’s Rubina and Rustandor in a close match (9-7) and Michigan’s Delicata/Exon, 8-5. The doubles tandems of O’Keefe and Mueller and DiPastina and Keesey won in the opening round before being knocked out in the Round of 32.
The ITA Midwest Regional will continue Saturday with the doubles Round of 16 beginning at 2 p.m. and the start of the 64-player main draw at 9 a.m.
