Women’s Tennis Ends First Day of Qualifying at ITA Midwest Regional – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three members of the Ohio State women’s tennis team competed in the first day of qualifying at the 2006 ITA Midwest Regional in East Lansing, Mich. Players need to win three matches to advance to the 64-player main draw.
Buckeye sophomore Angela DiPastina (Titusville, N.J./Hun School of Princeton), a 9-12 seed, is still alive after winning her first two matches. She downed Aneta Maricevic of Detroit in straight sets and DePaul’s Kirsten Gambrell in three sets (6-4, 5-7, 6-2). She will face Erin Clark of Indiana in the Round of 16 for a spot in the main draw.
Both Kristen Messmer (Lutherville, Md./McDonogh) and Julie Voss (San Angelo, Texas/St. Stephen’s Academy)were defeated in the Round of 32. Messmer beat Cincinnati’s Rachel Owens before losing to Sandra Sasidharan of Eastern Illinois. Voss downed Shivani Dave of Illinois and was knocked out of the draw by Indiana’s Lindsay Stuckey, a 9-12 seed, in round two.
Julie Blackmore (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons), Caitlin O’Keefe (Troy, Mich./Troy), Sonia Ruzimovsky (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Technical), Christina Keesey (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) and Ally Mueller (Roswell, Ga./New Braunfels (Texas) comprise the group of five Buckeyes who have already earned a spot in the main draw, slated to start Saturday with the rounds of 64 and 32.
Doubles play, with a 64-team draw, begins Friday and includes four Ohio State duos. The pairings of O’Keefe/Mueller, Blackmore/Ruzimovsky, Keesey/DiPastina and the final team of Messmer coupled with Ciara Finucane (Dublin, Ireland/Georgia Southern) will begin play Friday with two rounds.
