COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s gymnastics team completed the final of three exhibitions Saturday at Steelwood Athletic Training Facility with the Varsity Exhibition. Juniors Nicholaus Searcy and Willie Ito were named as the Buckeyes 2006 captains during introductions at the exhibition.
Searcy earned the team’s Most Improved Award following efforts during the 2005 season and finished fourth on parallel bars (9.225) at the 2005 Big Ten Individual Event Championships. Ito competed in all 11 Buckeye meets, including the NCAA Championships, and recorded a career high 9.9 on pommel horse and high bar in 2005.
Head coach Miles Avery welcomed Ohio State men’s gymnastics alumni, family and friends to the 2006 squad’s final practice before starting the season at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago Saturday.
Former Buckeyes Cody Trobaugh (2005), Randy Monahan (2005), Kerry Adderly (2004), Raj Bhavsar (2003), Daren Lynch (2001), Earnest Nelson (2001) Michael Canales (1999), and Michael Racanelli (1990) suited-up again to test themselves on the apparatuses in the training center. The alumni performed on various events including floor exercise, pommel horse, rings and high bar.
“It’s a fun exhibition because it’s always nice to see people come out and support the team,” Avery said. “In addition, it is a good time for the team to thank and meet the alumni.”
This season Avery looks for the team to be strong on floor exercise with the addition of freshman Eddie Hay, and to also score high on vault, led by sophomore Jimmy Wickham, as the Buckeyes enter the 2006 season.
